Type/Text Variables: file name, modification date, page number, artboard name/size, etc.
Please add Type/Text Variables/Insert Variables/Modification Date upon save. Same as InDesign.

Makes total sense, thanks! I’m merging this one into the larger request about text variables. Some solutions were mentioned in comments and there are some more newer ones (like Multi-edit text script, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PcyT0KmuepI)

Hi there, Egor, sorry having trouble explaining this in a succint way but I need to create various "tickets" in portrait and landscape to both say the same thing but the layout has to be different as disclaimer text is very long so on a landscape page it is fine to be on the wider side but would be too small as a symbol on the portrait version.
Its important that the disclaimer text is identical and if any changes are made, to avoid human error of not updating everywhere, if it could be a symbol that dynamically fills the size of the text box rather than the duplication of the symbol size and shape.
Does this make more sense? The attached is an example of the problem and a possible solution

Louise, can you tell a bit more about the workflow you have in mind, with some examples, please?
There are several related / similar existing requests and I want to make sure these align. -

Basically to have the ability to create the same text in multiple places with text boxes of varying sizes / ratios. Would probably need settings to either reduce text size / update amount of lines /error if the sizing is way too small (i.e. text would need to go below 6pt)

i work with hundreds of Illustrator artwork files every day and i am sick of manually updating the date and file name on the Page template every time when InDesign can do these things automatically. please add this function it to one of your very frequent updates.

I would like to see the InDesign variable data feature of being able to link a text box's contents to the file name be implemented in Illustrator. In ID this is under the text menu and used primarily to add the file name to print documents outside the crop. I work for a military contractor and we have large teams of technical illustrators creating illustrations for repair and user manuals in Illlustrator. Most military standards, and technical illustration styles require unique artboard numbers be included on the artboard itself and tied to the file name. Currently this is something we need to update and check using Java script. Including this will not only help users but also help maintain Adobe's place in an industry that it is currently deviating course from.

HI , Why i can not find "Page" in "Script" in File in Illustrator.
I want to insert page number in Illustrator automatically instead of manually. I saw some tip that to add the page by selecting page in the File/Script/Page. But my AI doesn't show this feature. Please help me. Thanks -

There are several external solutions for that:

I need this feature also,
When making some technical drawing, it's really boring to enter a text which should be the document name...
without all the mispelling you can do... -
I have a working although a bit tedious way to number an existing set of artboards. They won’t update themselves, as one can expect from auto-numbers, but it’s simple enough to repeat, if all numbers have the same appearance.
1. Create a '1' text and place it in a position you want your numbers to occupy on the first artboard.
2. Group it and isolate the selection. Now you have your text in isolation mode and nothing else would be selected in next steps.
3. Select All and Ungroup it. Now that temporary group used to be able to isolate a text object is gone.
4. Cut the text
5. Press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+V (Windows) or Edit > Paste on All Artboards. Now we have 1-s at every artboard.
6. Select all
7. Run the attached script (rename it from .txt to .jsx). It takes the first text object in the selection and increment the next one by 1 for the whole range.
Now you have all your artboards numbered. You can now group the objects to easily access them later.
It can be automated with an action. A workaround, but a working one!
Please comment back if it works for you. -
I’d even say we need automatic inline variables, and one of them should be page numbers.

Is it possible to add a similar feature to "text variables" from InDesign to Illustrator? In particular - the file name, modification date.
It would be even better if there were some variables, for example - author, size of the canvas, minimum size of the text used in the project. -
Meanwhile you can use Batch Text Edit script or native Find and Replace.
-
This can be done with Variables manually, somewhat easier with the Variable Importer script, but the method generally sucks.
Limitations of it are described here (and Vasily Hall, the author of the script, comments there):

Text can function as a smart object. Select two text boxes that have the same text (ex. "July 2021") and apply a feature that pairs the two, so when one is updated, the other updates automatically as well.

So so needed. Given the resource Adobe have it's crazy that they do not action requests within weeks of them appearing.
