  1. Improve snapping strength

Currently, there is a "snap to point" feature in illustrator. However, I find that it works poorly. Often, I create guides, create geometric shapes on those guides, and move them overlap, join, or intersect to make new shapes. Currently, when I create a shape, I notice the shape will snap to a guide, but when I zoom in all the way, it will not be exact. Also, when I try to move two shapes together, I will experience the snapping effect, but it often is not lined up when I zoom in.

Is it possible to improve the snapping to…

  2. Font identification

Provide an automated routine to identify fonts that were converted to outlines, or that are in a bitmap format.

  3. Group Overlapping Objects

A very casual and time-consuming operation, especially because we lost Object Lasso (https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657-illustrator-desktop-feature-requests/suggestions/44462988-bring-back-object-lasso-tool) — drag a marquee around objects, hit Gtrl+G, drag another, group again... repeat dozens of time, especially if you draw icons or something similar for stocks.

What if Illustrator was able to do it for us?
Scan the selection, search for overlapping objects and create groups?

What if it could do that in two modes: simple, by intersecting boundaries, and advanced, when true outlines being checked?

What if it could do that with a tolerance also? Like if object are, say, 10 pixels apart, group…

  4. Keyboard shortcuts for all Pathfinder options (Unite, Divide, Trim, etc)

I work quickly and would like custom shortcuts for all the Pathfinder options.

  5. Gradient “easing” / bezier curve control for color stops

Any work that utilizes gradients in Illustrator would benefit greatly from the addition of the ability to manually control/adjust the bezier curves of the gradients’ color stops.

The specifics of how this works are discussed here: https://larsenwork.com/easing-gradients/

Ultimately, this level of control allows for significantly more pleasing and subtle gradients. Relying on midpoints to adjust gradients ultimately results in very obviously visual “steps” from one color stop to the next.

I’ve attached a video demonstrating the easing function, as well as a before and after image to illustrate its effect.

  6. Bring back Live Trace (fix Image Trace)

Image Trace creates unusual artifacts when tracing even somewhat complex lineart. The tracing is also always shifted from the original position. This never used to happen using Live Trace, it almost always worked perfectly. I've tried several different settings multiple times, the results are never as good as they used to be in Live Trace. I had to install Illustrator CS4 today just to use Live Trace because the Image Trace results on the latest Illustrator were too messy.

  7. Make the new "Properties" panel optional.

The idea of the properties panel is nice, but it should be customizable. For example, the four pathfinder tools that come up when more than one object is selected aren't the main four that I use, so it would be nice to be able to switch out the default four that pop up.

It would also be nice if there were a way to not use the new properties panel, and be able to switch in the windows drop down menu to using the old properties panel that is in the top bar across the screen. I don't love the…

  8. Keyboard shortcut to hide/show selected Layer

Option to assigne a keyboard shortcut for hide/show selected layer. Currently you have to click on the eye icon, which is pretty cumbersome. (for eg Photoshop has this feature, I think).

(I'm on a project where you need to trace this huge sketch with ready made elements and so toggle layer visibility is a fast way to see how things are aligning.) Cheers!

  9. Objects snapping to objects from other artboards.

I hope this is the right location for this. It may be more of a feature request. When trying to utilize the smart guides to align two objects be dragging, often times the object I am dragging will snap to objects from other artboards. This forces me to select the objects that I want aligned, choose a key object, then go to align panel to make sure they are lined up properly. Snapping to the nearest object or something along those lines would make the most sense. Or maybe setting to allow this.

  11. 'Use preview bounds' option for symbols

AI allows to 'Use preview bounds' — to count in stroke's weight in artwork's size.
I rarely use it, but I can always turn it off, like I do in screencast attached.

But when I decide to turn my artwork to symbol, I'm limited to only one option — stroke is counted in ALWAYS. This is very inconvenient for some design tasks.

I would like to have an option anywhere to change this behavior.

  12. Global Edit in Isolation mode

Global edit is very powerful but not a fully realized feature.
Many things are missing from it (like this one: https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657-illustrator-feature-requests/suggestions/35768314-create-symbols-from-global-edit)

Another one is that the Global Edit button is completely missing when you are in isolation mode. So instead of entering a group and editing similar objects only in this particular group, we are forced to lock similar objects manually (because GE won’t allow to do it), EXIT the isolation mode, start GE and edit found similar-s with everything else NOT isolated (which obstructs editing).

Let me provide a practical example I am working on. I have several…

  13. the option "History", as in Photoshop; In photoshop.

The new illustration update, should have the option "History", as in Photoshop. I was just working on a design and really needed that tool, but as it was, it took me another hour doing everything again. Please, it would be a very useful tool in Illustrator.

  14. Do not silently turn on "Turn off data recovery for complex documents"

I feel great sadness typing this. The whole auto save feature is intended to quietly SAVE stuff if Illustrator goes belly up. This is extra valid for complex documents. Why ON EARTH would Illustrator silently turn off this feature for the VERY DOCUMENTS it is designed for?

Please: notify a user if Illustrator, for any reason, decides to mess with the autosave feature. But mostly just don't turn it off if a user has it turned on. Just don't.

  15. Keep transparency when raster image is copied/pasted (at least from PS)

I have, let's say, image with background erased. I want to copy it in PS and paste in AI, intending opacity to be kept, but NO, you get opaque image.
I don't care who is in charge for this, you or PS team, just get it done already.

  17. Better antialiasing

Long time ago I abandoned Xara and moved to Illustrator full-time.
I managed to solve all problems I had encountered with, but several things still bug me.

    One of them is this:
    https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/601447-illustrator-bugs/suggestions/31525333-minus-front-on-grouped-objects
    https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/601447-illustrator-bugs/suggestions/32954797-pathfinder-must-work-with-group-as-a-single-object

The other one is a crude antialiasing.

    See attached images.
Zara puts more shades of gray to show the slope of test line, while AI leaves more uniformly filled areas. It gets more noticeable when angle gets sharper.
    Changing antialising options doesn't help.

    Please, make antialiasing better.

  18. Allow linked content within symbols.

It would be nice to create symbols with linked content that would update when the linked content changes. Currently you have to embed anything within a symbol, images for example.

  20. Introduce bevel joint clamp values for strokes

Adobe's miter limit is something quite weird. I was lucky to find and bookmark this article to learn it, finally:
    https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/mswanson/2006/03/24/miter-limits-in-illustrator-and-wpf/

As you can see, AI have no tools for defining how much of a stroke would be cut when joint is beveled. I want some.
