"Hyphenate" not be the default paragraph option
By default, paragraph text is set to hyphenate words that don't fit into the text box. I suggest that the default is to have text not be hyphenated so you can click the box if you want it to be.
No one I know has ever wanted hyphenated words in text, but you have to uncheck the "Hyphenate" box from the Paragraph Palette, it's annoying to have to do that every time I make a new paragraph or paragraph style. (same problem in indesign)

We’re exploring turning ‘Hyphenation’ OFF in [Normal Paragraph Style] of all Document Profiles.

Most of the time I do NOT want or need hyphenations in copy blocks, and would be nice to have the default setting as no hyphenation, so I can get rid of the extra step everytime I work with copy

There is a "Hyphenation" section in the preferences window already. Would it be terribly difficult to add a checkbox there that toggles whether paragraphs have hyphenation enabled or not by default?
There is a toggle in the Paragraph window for hyphenation that is on by default; I mean, it has to be getting that default setting from somewhere, right? I'm speaking from ignorance here, but it seems like a simple checkbox in the preferences should be an easy fix.

Even moving the hyphenate checkbox to the top level in the properties panel instead of in the dropdown under paragraph would help as an interim fix

OMG Yes. I hate that I'm forever turning off hyphenation.

Yeah, please fix this. Like SO many others have commented, can't you just reverse the functionality? (make it opt-in instead of opt-out)

Is this still in progress? I haven't been able to find how to change the default setting to unclick hyphenation.

It's not difficult, Admin has no interest in working on this since it's not web related. Doesn't have to be anything-aware, we should be able to TURN OFF HYPHENATION and it stays off forever. We should also be able to specify _____ font as default, change the default PDF setting, and be able to save files that ARE NOT 6X TIMES LARGER THAN THE CONTENT OF THE FILE.

Might be too difficult, but what if the hyphenation were content-aware? If text was below a certain point size, (12 or 14) then it might get hyphenation turned on by default, but over that size (likely a heading or larger format text) then it would be unchecked.

For this reason I'm out. Happy with Sketch and other more contemporary apps. Does anyone work at Adobe Still? Apps only get worse!

I don't understand why this hasn't already been done to be honest. It should be a toggle setting at least, not something you have to mess with every single flipping time. it is so annoying and time wasting!

Hyphenation is good for justified text to prevent rivers of word spaces up and down the columns, but for aligned left copy it should not be the default as one uses align left to avoid having this problem. I second non-hyphenation as the default. One can turn on hyphenation to break lines for aesthetic reasons.
