  1. In-line Graphics / Anchor Object to text ability (like InDesign)

Please allow in-line graphics in text paragraphs, so graphics will move along with the rest of the copy within text. I am working on a lot of signage/wayfinding and the rooms keep getting moved about. Arro symbols and toilet icons have to be positioned manually and it is VERY time consuming. I wish the original artwork had been created in InDesign! Thanks

Please share some real cases for this feature you had in your practice, which could have benefit greatly from having inline graphics. It will help the team to plan it and make it more useful for Ai users, than analogues we have in InDesign and Figma.

  2. Japanese characters in Japanese fonts are misaligned in Vertical Text Alignment

Starting with v24.3, vertical text alignment is now available. This is a great feature we have been waiting for. However, characters in Japanese fonts are misaligned at the center and bottom, as shown in Figure-1.

This is probably due to the fact that the bottom edge of the character is used as the baseline.Maybe we need The Last Baseline option. It's a tough road. But the Illustrator team can make it happen, I am sure of it.

  3. Allow to set font-size by setting x-height and cap height

I very often create designs where I should have certain x-height.
Now I have to achieve this using long workaround (I do it very quick now, but now quick enough, and its not actionable):
    1. Create copy of typed text with Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F
    2. Outlining copy
    3. Finding symbol with flat top an bottom (x or X or similar)
    4. Choose Direct selection tool
    5. Shift+click chosen letter
    6. Deleting unwanted symbols from copy
    7. Scale outline of chosen letter 1000%
    8. Going outline mode (enlarged letter will probably take whole screen)
    9. Shift+click at live text behind letter
    10.…

I am glad to remind all who voted for this feature that it is now possible to set a font size as x-height or cap height with Show Font Height Options toggle enabled in Character panel menu.

Some issues still remain, yes, like, wrong size calculation if a font has rounded stems that end below baseline (https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/601447-illustrator-desktop-bugs/suggestions/44639661-font-height-options-misbehave-with-rounded-fonts), or inability to focus the dropdown with Tab (https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/601447-illustrator-desktop-bugs/suggestions/41836618-font-height-options-tab-order), or calculating font height by measuring glyphs instead of reading the actual value within the font (https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/601447-illustrator-desktop-bugs/suggestions/41615035-cap-height-setting-not-using-font-cap-height), but overall this is done, works, and super cool, don’t you think?

  4. Create Tables

Create tables by anyway, it shouldn't have much options, such a simple table (simple borders), instead i have to draw lines to get a view of table.

  7. Add ability to apply gradient to text without using new fill

AI allows to make live text colored with gradient only by applying new fill to a text. This knowledge often comes occasionally, when users finally got into Appearance. AI just doesn't says it't wrong, shows no hint, does nothing when people try to apply gradient as they do for everything else.

Meantime, each symbol within text can have their own fill.
And when you apply gradient with a drag to an ungrouped set of path objects, AI applies gradient to all of them, placing each gradient into right position.

Thus I just don't understand, why AI still doesn't allow to…

  9. Allow formatting of bullets & numbers in lists

Bullets and numbers currently inherit the formatting of the first character in the list item. This is not very flexbile and creates issues when in one list there are bold items and regular items.
There should be an option to add formating to the bullet as well as the numbers. Also: there should be an option to use any kind of character of a dingbats font as a bullet. Bonus would be if any kind of shape could be used.

  10. Non-breaking space (NBSP) should work

AI ignores NBSP when it's places as symbol. 'No break' option is an option but ridiculously hard to be applied quickly. Anyway NBSP should work

  11. Add an option for trimming side bearings

Valerii Mamedov pointed out the problem with side bearings, when each new line of text is shifted from the edge:
    https://i.imgur.com/mwHx6pG.png

This forces us to manually kern first glyph, which takes time, changes upon new font and still lacks precision.

Besides other appliances Illustrator is used for typographic design, and if user could set trimming of side bearings as a paragraph option, this could greatly help with font visual alignments.

The problem is amply described here:

  12. TateChuYoko’s Adjustment value is limited to an integer in point

The "TateChuYoko" using for vertical writing text, under use in Japanese environment.
The adjustment value is set only to integers of points and it is very troubling.
In that state, I can only do a rough job too much.
I would like to improve so that more detailed values can be set.

    <Japanese>
    縦中横設定の調整量がポイントの整数値ごとにしか設定できない。
    これでは大雑把な仕事しかできない。
    細かい値を設定できるよう改善して欲しい。

  14. Type on path with multiple lines

We need to extend Type on Path to allow it to be multiline.
The picture does explain it well enough.
Instead of manual offsetting lines (I used AG Offset tool to make a lot of them at once) and making threads, we should be able to just tick an option and get a LIVE result.

Also, please see the related request about upgrading the UX of Type on Path as well:

  17. Allow to marquee select within an area type text box without creating a new text object

Marquee Select with text box in scope creates a new text box. This did not occur in Illustrator in the last 5+ years that I have been using it. This is relevant for users like me who do more text editing in Illustrator.

in 2017 and prior, when you had a text box in scope that you were editing text in, you could marquee select the text or portions of it by starting a click outside of the text area. Now, in 2018, this will create a new text box every time. The result is that it is noticeably more…

    Hi,

Thanks for submitting this request , Illustrator team really appreciate this.
We had taken your feedback on this and added it to backlog

  18. Make cursor instantly visible after jumping with arrows keys

While navigating text with arrows (or Ctrl/Cmd + arrows), especially in short word clusters, something like these:
    mon-sun: 10:00–19:00
    break: 13:00–14:00
it's quite hard to understand where cursor has landed after last jump, because cycle of blinking seem to stay the same or even elongate!
There's a second after jump until cursor is finally drawn.
Could you please add or fix it in such a way that cursor is immediately visible after any arrow jump?

  20. フォント名表示の幅を調整できるオプションを追加してください

    macOS10.15、11
    Illustrator 25.4.3
