In Illustrator 2020 the changes to Align tool window are a headache. Defaulting to align by key object .... Very frustrating defaults. In Illustrator 2020 the changes to Align tool window are a headache. Defaulting to align by key object .... Very frustrating defaults.

Allow to set font-size by setting x-height and cap height I very often create designs where I should have certain x-height.
Now I have to achieve this using long workaround (I do it very quick now, but now quick enough, and its not actionable):
1. Create copy of typed text with Ctrl+C, Ctrl+F
2. Outlining copy
3. Finding symbol with flat top an bottom (x or X or similar)
4. Choose Direct selection tool
5. Shift+click chosen letter
6. Deleting unwanted symbols from copy
7. Scale outline of chosen letter 1000%
8. Going outline mode (enlarged letter will probably take whole screen)
9. Shift+click at live text behind letter

Some issues still remain, yes, like, wrong size calculation if a font has rounded stems that end below baseline (https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/601447-illustrator-desktop-bugs/suggestions/44639661-font-height-options-misbehave-with-rounded-fonts), or inability to focus the dropdown with Tab (https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/601447-illustrator-desktop-bugs/suggestions/41836618-font-height-options-tab-order), or calculating font height by measuring glyphs instead of reading the actual value within the font (https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/601447-illustrator-desktop-bugs/suggestions/41615035-cap-height-setting-not-using-font-cap-height), but overall this is done, works, and super cool, don’t you think?

Align to object on ANOTHER artboard! yeah yeah! Aligning to an object on another arboard would be really great + needed, for AI users.
In addition to functions like, align to key object and select/edit similar shapes,
It would be so so great to be abled to align an object, to another object, on another artboard! In short:
Aligning objects to the position of other objects on other artboards.
Without having to move objects to the same artboard 1st, or copy their x/y values, just for alignment. Some thoughts/notes:
Implementation,
With artboard rules activated, of course. This seems to be a similar function to the…4 votes -
Allow to align pins in the puppet warp tool with each other In the process of creating brushes from existing artwork, the puppet warp tool is very helpful. But currently, I have to manually align the "spine" of an object and make use of the ruler. See attached.
Unless of course, I am missing a step? I tried the align tool and it doesn't work for the pins for me. Would love if it did.

Make Align and Distbute work for direct selected Paths When subPaths of groups are selected, Align or Distribute works on the complete group, where we expect to work on the selection.

Convert outline text to editable text I work with a lot of files that come to me with outline text, which I then have to retype from scratch. It would be a really useful feature if outline text could be converted to editable text - could there be some kind of auto-recognition (OCR) of the outline text and generate editable text from this? Built-in OCR?

Need an option so that left/right justified point-text anchor aligns exactly with edge of text... I would really like to see an option that will adjust the anchor point of left/right aligned point-text so that the anchor aligns with the visual edge of the text. See screenshot example.

Tabs panel doesn't work well with multiple-area text Draw a pair of text areas side-by-side (e.g., a two-page spread). Link them and fill with placeholder text. Open the Tabs panel.
The Tabs panel wants to be the width of both columns if you click the "Position Panel above Text" magnet icon. This probably means that much of it is shooting off-screen in one direction or another, as I would typically zoom in to work with a single column of text at a time.
Go somewhere in the second area and type a line like:
"foo bar stuff"
with tabs between the words. My desire is to…3 votes -
Please add feature for to make object as key object via script to perform align operations. Hi, I am a plugin developer, and there is a lot of features we are missing in Illustrator scripting that can be done manually in Illustrator. This is the one feature. Please add this feature so that we have some method or property to make the object as a key object to perform "Align to Key Object" operation via script.

Text Alignment The Text font reflects the actual physical font size. We're doing sign, size of the font is very important to us.

anchor object to text ability (like indesign) Ability to anchor an object within text in a text frame in Illustrator. In other words, when the text reflows, the object would move along with the text. There are forums on this already - but I don't see a request anywhere! I know this is available in indesign....but it's not in illustrator.

Text selection area... It would be nice if the selection area of text did NOT extend beyond the limits of the text itself. There is an invisible 'window' around text that will select the text when this are is clicked. It also aligns to the invisible window when aligning to other objects. Would like this are to be removed, so it is easier to select things around or near text.
Have NO idea what the purpose of this area is...3 votes -
Let me change reading direction with the vertical text tool When using the vertical text tool (which probably was designed for asian scripts) the default textflow is from right to left (as with most asian languages, I guess). It would be need if I could change it to left to right.
Issue has also been discussed here:

Text selection If I have a text box selected and switch to the text tool, why does Illustrator assume I want to select a non-selected text box to edit text in? It should prioritize the selected text box over non-selected text boxes.

Aligning to a certain object The Align tools in all Adobe programs is a wonderful feature. However, in Illustrator when you Align objects it changes the position of ALL of them. In other programs, it tends to be the last object you select takes the dominant position - aligning all others to it. In Illustrator it doesn't seem to matter the order you select, it just aligns it to the nearest center point (thus moving ALL the objects). The Lock feature doesn't help as you cannot select a locked object to align with/to.
16 votesYou can align to an object you choose to be the key one.. Click the object you want to use as a key the second time and Ai will use a bolder edge to highlight it.

Text editing - missing keyboard shortcuts Some text editing shortcuts would be very welcome:
Ctrl + End: go to the end of the text
Ctrl + Home: go to the beginning of the text
Ctrl + Delete: delete all characters of a word to right
Ctrl + Backspace: delete all characters of the word to left14 votes -
Start editing text hotkey Whenever I want to edit a text, I have to pick a Text tool an click it, or double-click it with a Selection tool. Why would I need to click a text which is already selected?
Please, make Ctrl+Enter start editing selected text, as PS does now. If several text objects are selected, use topmost, or closest to the screen's center or cursor or give people an option to choose.

tabs and text options Tabulations should be embedded in the tex box and appear only when you press on the box and disappears when you click somewhere else. By default, it should also resize and follow the tex box on screen at all time without requiring you to click on the magnet to put it back where it belong.
Also, the text options of Illustrator are lacking some very useful options that only exist in InDesign. I understand that Indesign is THE BIG SOFTWARE FOR TEXT, but honestly for smaller text oriented documents, I often use Illustrator because it's faster to operate. So,…
