Object selection stays selected after clicking away or to a different object
For many versions now the issue persist. Happened not only with this machine but with others all MACs running the latest update both on adobe and OS.
The issue is with the selection tool. so I click on an object generally one that is grouped and then make edits then when I click away a larger bounding box appears as if I am selecting all but I cant pinpoint what it is that has been selected. I move a newly selected object that is not in the group to a different area of the artboard and the selection or bounding box remains. It reshapes itself when the newly selected object but noting else changes. There have been times when the something does change. I did read that a work around was to select all then click away, 80% of the time it works but sometime i have to just start creating a new object to make the bounding box go away.

Also having this issue or something like it. Basically it will only unselect if I hit certain parts of the screen, (even clicking off artboard where there are no objects does not work) and then the selection behavior afterward is unpredictable. Attaching screenshots to illustrate. Red X is where I clicked. Selection edges are shown.
I don't know how I'm going to make my deadline like this.
This has been happening to me and most of the people I work with whatever system and Illustrator version we're on. I can't believe it's still doing it on CC2019 and Mojave. It wastes an amount of my time nearly every day and has been the cause of accidental editing/deletion of unrelated items in the past. It often seems to be a masked image that defines one dimension of the large selection area that appears but there are few patterns or successful ways to get out of it, short of restarting AI.
This is driving me bananas man please fix this.
