1. Selection and Direct selection tool behaviour errors

   The issues have to do with what items are selected, and which properties are displayed in panels (appearance and attributes) when using the selection tool and the direct selection tool on various configurations of item.

   Please see the attached AI file for a thorough QA breakdown of this issue (s).

   The most impactful error can be seen when using the Direct Selection tool on an item(path or text) in a group which contains only that one single item.

   The expected behaviour should be the same as for any other usage of the direct select tool: it selects the item within the group, and its properties are visible in the appearance panel, the attributes panel, and other panels.

   The actual behaviour is that the group is selected, and the group properties are visible in the other panels. The item's own properties are now very hard to access.

   A bizarre error with the Selection tool happens on a groups that have no note attribute; checking the note in the attributes panel shows up wrongly.

   The expected behaviour is that the note should be blank and editable for the group. The actual behaviour on groups with one single item is that the note of the item within the group is displayed. The actual behaviour on groups with multiple items is an erroneous message that reads "The current selection contains different notes.". This is wrong because the notes are properties of items within the group; not the group itself (which should be selected). The impact is that the group's note is inaccessible (except via scripting).

2. slicing problem

   I'm having a weird glitch with Illustrator. The program works fine until it suddenly the selection stops working. no matter which tool I select I get the same result- the cursor slices any shape that's selects. I can't pick anything or preform and other function, the cursor just slices the shape. If I close the program and restart it it fixes itself only to happen again a few minutes into the re-launch.

3. Small objects rotating instead of scaling when grabbing corners of bounding box

   New laptop has forced me over to Win11 & the latest suite. Illustrator 26.3.1

   When trying to grab small objects by their corners to scale, it rotates.

   Expected result - Being able to scale!
   Actual Result - Rotating, immediately putting the object at 45 degrees.

   An old thread from 2018 ("Rotate vs scale") claims this may have something to do with scaling on high res monitors but was marked solved without being solved. This new laptop has a 4k screen.

   If you hover the cursor juuuust inside the corner it works, but anything outside and it's forcing rotation.

   If I zoom in, I can then grab the corners to scale.

   New laptop has forced me over to Win11 & the latest suite. Illustrator 26.3.1

4. Selection tolerance too tight on high resolution displays in Windows

   Selection tolerances are much too tight when trying to select a line rather than a shape - you have to be within 1-2 pixels to select properly, which makes it super hard to select lines.

   This can be fixed slightly by changing the UI scale, but only works if you change it to 'comically large'. It works fine on my MacBook so looks like a Windows problem.

   Smart guides don't help since smart guides don't work when snap to grid is selected for some reason.

   You can see the minute differences in the pointer position in the screenshots.

5. Select Same Fill/Stroke Color ignores Compound Shapes

   Select > Same > Fill Color (and I assume the other related functions) ignores the color set for Compound Shapes (if it differs from the color of the original shapes used to create the Compound Shape). Even if you have one selected before triggering the function it refuses to select it. It is as if it cannot see the color assigned to the Compound Shape itself.

   Windows 10, latest version of Adobe Illustrator 26.0.1

   1. I have a file consisting of multiple rectangles all with the exact same color (e.g. black).
   2. I make two rectangles of a different color (e.g. red) and combine them into a Compound Shape (Alt-click using the pathfinder).
   3. I set the fill color of my Compound Shape to the same color as the other objects (black).
   4. If I now select one object (even if it's the compound shape), and choose Select > Same > Fill Color it will select everything except the Compound Shape

   Select > Same > Fill Color (and I assume the other related functions) ignores the color set for Compound Shapes (if it differs from the color of the original shapes used to create the Compound Shape). 6. Direct Selection Tool selects objects by their center points

   When using the Direct Selection Tool to make a selection within another object via click and drag, the tool automatically selects the outer object, regardless of its fill setting.

   In previous versions of Illustrator, it would not select such an object if it had no fill, which made it easy to select multiple paths and points that were contained within an object with a simple click and drag gesture. Now, this is rendered impossible and makes the tool much more tedious to use.

   This absolutely needs to be fixed!

7. Locked and/or hidden objects still become selected

   The object is locked and/or not visible, yet when the layer is selected, all objects including the locked and hidden objects become selected and move when they should not.

8. Selecting & deselecting objects is buggy too

   While working in a file:
   Attempting to select more than one object at a time to move them simultaneously works, but then I cannot deselect the objects by clicking the art board as in all previous versions of Illustrator.
   I have to click on each object at a time to deselect them. It doesn't always happen, but it happens often enough that it becomes an issue with work efficiency.

9. Warning Message "Partially selected objects..." Repeated

   The warning message repeats:

   "Partially selected objects cannot be set as key objects. In order to set an object as a key object, make sure the entire object is selected and try again."

   The problem no longer happens in latest releases, like 26 and 27.

10. Bounding Box suddenly changes its size for rotated objects

    Depending on rotation of linked file the bounding box scales extra large. No groups. Linked PSD file. Windows 10, Illustrator 25.0.1.

11. Select > Object > All Text Objects incorrectly selects hidden/locked grouped text

    Windows 10
    Illustrator 24.2.3 (64-bit)

    Select > Object > All Text Objects incorrectly selects hidden/locked grouped text.

    This causes two issues:
    1. hidden/locked groups of text shouldn't be selected at all by this command. (It won't actually select a hidden group of text if the TextFrame(s) inside the group are also explicitly hidden individually).
    2. In a case where everything is unhidden/unlocked, this command selects the GROUP of TextFrames, not the TextFrames directly. This command will actually correctly select TextFrames in a group directly if there is another type of object sharing the group, like a pathItem, for some strange reason. But if a group is solely comprised of TextFrames then the group itself will be selected incorrectly instead of the TextFrames every time.

    This is an immensely difficult and annoying problem to try to work around, especially in ExtendScript as it is difficult to make sure any sneaky GroupItem objects didn't make it into the selection.

12. Objects become locked

    Objects become locked in place for no reason - no object is set to lock.
    This happens randomly when working with objects / shapes / strokes.

    The only way to get rid of the issue is to restart Illustrator.

13. Selections are automatically deselected after a few seconds

    Lately, Illustrator will deselect anything I select with either the selection or direct selection tool (doesn't matter which one) and it makes for a very frustrating experience. Anyone have an idea to fix?

    I am running Dell (windows) latest AI version
    Core i9 2.9 ghz
    32GB RAM
    Windows 10 Enterprise ("1903)
    have a eGPU hooked up external 4k monitor with Radeon card.

14. Selecting a second image with a marquee doesn’t include it in the bounding box

    The problem here is with image objects. It matters how you select them. If you select them the wrong way, you get no selection handles, or scaling handles.

    Using just the regular selection tool, if you Shift + drag over one image object to select it, then shift drag over another image object, you get no selection handles for scaling. If you shift drag over both image objects you also get no selection handles.

    If you shift and click on one image object, then shift click the other, it works fine.
    If you drag a single selection over both image objects it works fine.

    If you are selecting a vector object and an image object, it only works properly if you first select the image object. As long as the image object is selected first, it doesn't matter how you do the selection, clicking or dragging. It always works. But, if you select the vector object first, it will only work if you click on the vector object first, then shift click on the image object. Or, drag a single selection over vector, then image object next.

15. Sometimes click outside artboard to deselect object not working

    Illustrator v24.0.2
    I don't know what triggers this, but sometimes there's error in selection that causing the object to be highlighted and can't deselect it by clicking outside artboard with selection tool.
    This is getting frustrating. I really hope Illustrator get a renewal just by rebuilding the program from scratch without changing the initial tool since the bug is just too much.

    workaround :
    If the object is a grouped object, then double click it to enter isolation mode, and double click again to get out.
    If not, then, save and close and re-open the document.

16. Bounding Box is larger than selected objects’ bounds, as if something else is selected

    If this is something that is still happening for you, please share a test file you can reproduce this problem with, along with the video showing this happening for you, so that the team can try to reproduce it and investigate.

17. Guides dissapear when selected

    In a new document (CC2019) with multiple artboards, the guides dissapear when I select them. They reappear when unselected.

18. Random selections and wandering selection tool

    When selecting and deselecting layers, the software will select and deselect other layers on its own. The selection tool and text tool will wander on its own all over the screen when trying to select or add text.

19. Select Objects Behind with Cmd/Ctrl click only works on filled objects

    The option to select objects behind by holding Cmd/Ctrl and clicking sequentially works when clicking an object's fill, but not its path. As such, it doesn't work if 'Object Selection by Path Only' is enabled in preferences.

    I can't think of a reason it shouldn't work when clicking on a path, so I'm reporting as a bug.

20. Selection of all objects inside a group instead selects group

    In previous versions of Illustrator if I was inside a group, and I selected all the objects, it would treat it like typical multi-selection. Now once I've selected all the objects, Illustrator behaves as though I have selected the group.

    For example, I have 3 objects at 40% opacity. I group them, so now there's a group (with 100% opacity) containing 3 objects (at 40% opacity). When I enter the isolated group, and I select the first object, the transparency shows 40%. Nothing changes when I select the second object (still shows 40%). However, when I select the third object, it now shows 100% (the containing group transparency).

    I'm not sure if this is a bug or a feature, but it feels more like the former to me. If I wanted to select the group as a whole, I would back out of the currently active isolation group and select the group.

    I am happy to share that we have fixed this bug in our latest release – 24.2.0 which is available worldwide now.

    Going forward, our goal is to fix as many top User-Voice bugs as possible and as frequently as possible. Given the nature of the fixes, some of the bugs will take a longer time to fix, but we are on it.
