1. Shift-clicking in Layers doesn't select range if filter is used

   I have dozens if not hundreds of elements I need to select in a document. I can get them into a contiguous list in the Layers panel with a filter, but this breaks range-selection.

2. No layer thumbnail for single element layers

   Issue: There's no layer thumbnail when dragging single elements to a new layer.

   This bug has been already mentioned and acknowledged, but has not been fixed, nor has had received any sort of update or follow up on its status. I believe it only affects v29.8.2 onwards.

3. Layer thumbnails are not displaying properly (CPU Preview)

   Issue: Layer thumbnails are cropped based on previous zoom state.

   When you open a document that's been previously saved in a zoomed-in state, all visible layers' thumbnails will only show the elements that are visible in the zoom view. That is, elements that were out of view when the document was saved, are no longer visible in their layer thumbnail after reopening the document.

   How to reproduce

   1. Make sure "GPU Performance" is turned OFF in the preferences.

   2. Create or open a document that has many elements in it.

   3. Zoom into a particular area of the document, purposely cropping other parts of the document out of view.

   4. Save the document.

   5. Close and reopen the document.

   6. Notice how the layers' thumbnails only display the elements that were in view.

   Another possibly related bug is when creating elements via scripting. Elements generated outside of the current view are immediately not visible in their layer's thumbnail.

   Some notes:

   • This only occurs when "GPU Performance" is explicitly switched OFF in the preferences (not by using CTRL+E or "View > View using CPU/GPU").

   • This only occurs for layers that are visible. Layers that had their visibility toggled off are not affected.

   • I believe the last version of Illustrator that did not have any of these problems was Illustrator 2024 (v28).

   If needed, I can provide more details and/or screen recordings of the bugs. Just let me know.

4. Illustrator Layers Panel Object Thumbnails No Longer Update After Edits

   In Illustrator, the object thumbnails in the Layers panel are no longer refreshing after changes are made to the artwork to match the new appearance. Because the preview remains outdated, it becomes harder to track changes and quickly identify the correct objects in complex files. This breaks a useful visual cue and makes the workflow less reliable and less efficient.

5. Unable to move Layer into Sub-layers

   Illustrator makes no sense. I have a Layer full of vectors, but when I try to insert that layer into another layer to become a sub-layer, Illustrator refuses to acknowledge my request. In what world would prohibit me from such a simple task?

6. Exporting layers to After Effects // Exportacion por capas a After Effects

   Illustrator layers are not being interpreted correctly in After Effects. The position of elements becomes disordered when accessing layers in After Effects as a composition. This bug has been present since the previous version. Please fix it; it's part of my daily work.

7. Collapsing layers with Opt/Alt won’t collapse sublayers

   When Opt/Alt + click on layer, only the TOPMOST sublayer is collapsed. The rest of the sublayers remain expanded.

8. Illustrator no longer keeping custom layer colors. Layer colors revert to black

   In recent Illustrator builds, custom layer colors applied to layers are not being saved with the document. When reopening the file, all layers that used custom colors revert to black, regardless of the original assignments. Default layer colors still persist correctly.

   Steps to Reproduce:
   Create a new Illustrator document.
   Add multiple layers.
   Assign custom RGB colors to the layers (not from the default layer color list).
   Save and close the document.
   Reopen the document.

   Expected Result:
   Layers retain the custom colors assigned to them.

   Actual Result:
   All custom-colored layers revert to black, while default colors are preserved.

   Impact:

9. Layer Assigned Color Changing Post Update

   Hello, After the update (August 12, 2025?) my Adobe Illustrator template layers change to black after saving a new project. I have built a template with many layers and assigned a color to each layer. After the update, when I open the template and save it as a new project, or simply update the template and save it, all layers that had an assigned color change to black. Is this a bug or an issue on my end?

10. Toggle Visibility Not Working in Layers Panel

    Windows 11 desktop, 12 GB graphics card, 32 GB RAM, Intel processor with 3.60 GHz, 64 Bit x64-based processor
    29.7.1 (64 bit)
    I am creating a design and trying to toggle the background layers to compare. When I click on the eye icon in the Layers panel, the layers sometimes go on/off and most often do not. Essentially, toggling visibility does nothing.

    I have checked that my layers are visible in the hamburger menu. I have restarted Ai and restarted my computer.

    My document is saved to the cloud - I did get an autosave is temporarily disabled warning and I get a plugin conflict message when I open AI - I have no plugins active in Ai that I can find in the Preferences settings. The plugin warning is for LogiOptionAi2020.aip

    The screenshots show that the background doesn't change even when I toggle the layers on or off. This problem only happens with the one layer- the top ones I have toggled off and when I toggle them back on they show up.

13. Ausgeblendete Objekte werden am Bildschirm angezeigt und trotz Ausblendung exportiert

    Ich verwende ein 64 Bit Betriebssystem und bin mit der Adobe CC stets auf dem aktuellsten Stand. Es stehen keine nicht installierten Updates an.

    Mein(e) Problem(e) trat(en) seit gestern verstärkt auf:
    Meine Datei besteht aus einigen Ebenen in denen Objekte in Gruppen oder einzeln liegen. Für den Export muss ich Elemente ausblenden. Zur Sicherheit habe ich alle anderen Objekte auf der Ebene stets gesperrt. Beim ein- und ausblenden entsteht der Fehler: Trotz Sperrung und Ausblendung wird das Objekt weiterhin angezeigt. Beim Export als PNG wird es leider auch mit exportiert (allerdings nicht zuverlässig - es kam auch vor, dass es am Bildschirm und in der PNG-Vorschau zu sehen war, im exportierten PNG aber nicht).

    Andere auffällige Fehler gestern traten beim Umbenennen der Objekte und Gruppen auf: Illustrator änderte beim Verschieben des Objekts ohne mein Zutun die Objektbenennung dieses oder einiger anderer Objekte.
    Heute fiel plötzlich beim Ausblenden der abgespeicherte Blur-Effekt (Gauscher Weichzeichner) von fünf Objekten aus. Hier wurde mir allerdings danach ein unbekannter Fehler gemeldet.

    Ebenfalls auffällig verhalten sich seit einigen Tagen meine Hilfslinien. Wenn ich die Linie setze ist sie unsichtbar. Klicke ich im Dokument an eine beliebige Stelle, erscheint sie wieder. Wähle ich sie aus, um sie zu verschieben, verschwindet sich optisch wieder und erscheint erst wieder, wenn ich anderswo hin klicke. Zum Arbeiten sehr mühsam!
    Keine der im Internet zu recherchierenden Fehlerbehebungsmaßnahmen greifen, da sich die dort beschriebenen Fehler immer mit bekannten Maßnahmen wie aus- und einblenden / sperren / anzeigen von Linealen etc. erledigen sollte.

    Hat jemand eine Idee, woran das liegen könnte?
    Gibt es Tastenkombinationen, die solch seltsames Verhalten auslösen (und die ich evtl. zufällig gedrückt haben könnte)?

14. Copying selection in Layers panel no longer works

    Illustrator 29.5.1 on Mac Mini M4 running Sequoia 15.4.1: Dragging the colored square in the Layers panel from one layer to another with the Option key pressed no longer copies the selection to the new layer. It just moves it to the new layer.

15. Can’t place an object between unfurled groups in Layers

    If you have two groups unfurled in Layers — good luck in positioning an object between them in Layers. Any spot you drop it in will move it into either group, like the first attached GIF shows.

    And if the object is originally within a group, you’d have to move it outside first, collapse both groups and only then put it in-between... when you have a complex layer structure it can be very painful.

    Unlike in Photoshop (GIF 2), Send Backwards / Send to Back won’t move the object outside of the group, and dragging the layer to the left side of the tree doesn’t work s well — in Photoshop it just works, in Illustrator we get the 'forbidden' cursor.

17. A group with any Warp effect applied to it fails to render hidden objects within when these are shown back

    When an image with 3 or more layers is grouped together then an arch effect is added to that group, the layer visibility toggle behaves strangely in a way where the layers disappear but do not reappear. once the layer visibility is back to on but the image cannot be seen Illustrator will allow you to click and drag the area to grab the "hidden" layer but it is now only an outline with no color fill until you move it. or refill the color. This is a feature we have used for years and never had an issue until recently (April 2025)

18. Problem with Grouping Layers

    I didn't use to have this problem and it doesn't seem to happen all the time, but when it happens it is annoying. That is, when I want to group two different sets of separately grouped objects into a grouped layer, what happens is that each of the layer groups with specific set of objects become combined into one single layer group. That is, the objects are no longer layer grouped by their original layer groups, but all the objects where combined into the same layer group. An Example would be: One layer group contains yellow objects and another layer group contains red objects. When I go into the layer panel and select both layer groups and hit ctrl G for group all the yellow and all the red objects become combined into a single layer group instead of the layer groups themselves becoming a sub-layer group of a sub group layer. Not only do I get this problem, but all the original layers that originally contained those separate layer groups become blank layers left on the template and that would be outright tedious to have to search through all the layers and delete the ones that are empty.
    I didn't use to have these problems so It must have been an update or something.

19. Locate Object highlights the first child of a selected group instead of the group itself

    When we select a group on canvas and click the Locate Object button, the tree gets unfolded and scrolled to the group.
    But for some strange reason, the item highlighted in the tree is not the group itself, but the first child within.
    This behavior is not new (although there was a time when Ai even used to keep the layer highlighted instead), but it feels odd.

20. Template Layers Still Visible on Export for PNG and JPG

    I am creating a logo package for a client and am attempting to export multiple logos / graphics with transparent backgrounds using the export panel. I've already confirmed multiple times that my PNG settings include transparency and that the View > Overprint Preview setting is unchecked. My background layer is set to non printing, however any PDF or PNG I export includes a visible background layer. I can completely hide this layer to avoid exporting it, but then I can't see my artwork correctly. The whole point of non printing layers is to see them when you are designing without exporting them. I am using Illustrator 29.1 and am on an iMac running Ventura 13.7.2.
    I've been using Illustrator for over 10 years and non printing layers have always worked. The fact that these layers are showing up in both PDF and PNG exports indicates that it's a global transparency issue and not a file type setting. I've read every thread I can find and tried every setting possible and cannot get non printing layers to export with transparency. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated!
