Smooth animated zoom not working in Overprint or Outline Preview modes
When Overprint preview is off, magnify is from center point, and when Overprint preview is on, magnify is a area box. WTH?!

Outline mode is basically unusable in it's current state. Sad.

Shouldn't objects rendered in outline mode display on-screen even more quickly than in fill / preview mode? What happened to the UI/UX engine to make AI run so sluggish? AI 8.0 was always faster in outline mode than in fill mode. Any ideas? Thanks!

If i turn off GPU performance the Interface gets very laggy. This happens only on the 5k screen. If i move the illustrator window to a 72 dpi Monitor everything works fine.
When i use GPU Performance the Artwork is not shown correctly. There is a screen recording attached.
If i have GPU performance switch on and i change to the outline preview mode the whole handling gets laggy, too.
Is there hope that illustrator gets a smooth performance like sketch without glitches?

Please fix the jagged artwork when "GPU Performance" is selected. The "fix" I've been offered is to deselect it but then the app lags to an unusable extent on my 4k external display both in and out of outline mode. Running MacOS High Sierra.

Animated zoom in outline mode == GPU acceleration in outline mode? Why is preview mode as snappy as it's always been for some, and incredibly slow for others (mbPro w/tb, +LG 5k, iMac 5k)? Illustrator indeed needs to be as responsive as it should be – couldn't agree more to Joaquim below. Outline-mode is a nightmare that is going on for 10 months now. Neither Illustrator 22 nor High Sierra make a difference. Please fix this (yesterday)!

This post has the wrong title. It should read: "Ilustrator needs to be SUPER responsive and snappy in Outline Mode like it was before the MacBook Pro Touch was released".

YES. please fix unresponsiveness in outline mode.
NO to Marquee zoom not being default. Marquee zoom is need for production reasons of final art going to print and should be the default. Without marquee zoom is nearly impossible to register selection against a dieline to snap accurately. One can only correct so many errors by designers who do not submit accurate work, and animated zoom breeds errors. Please consider the cost of plates, especially gravure drums are expensive and waste in our landfills.
Thanks for the video we had numerous forum posts on macs with a slow outline mode but was not aware windows also had this issue.

GTX 970m, Win 10, Illustrator 21.1.0 (64bit), Nvidia driver 385.41
If the discrete Nvidia GPU is active for Illustrator, then outline mode does not work.
Expected result: selecting outline from the view menu (or using ctrl+Y) will change the display to outline view, and then toggle back again.
Actual result: The displayed image becomes unresponsive (e.g. cannot pan, zoom) and does not change to outline view. The menu item (view>outline) text changes to read 'GPU preview CTRL+Y', which is directly above the actual GPU preview toggle (CTRL+E).
If the the GPU is set to integrated, the program behaves as expected, with the exception of the menu item text changing in this instance as well.
I have only encountered this issue on a laptop with discrete and integrated GPUs - it has not happened on a desktop without integrated GPU.
Video file attached to show the difference.

Zoom in and Zoom out in outline mode - refresh and redraws are still horrendous.

Hi C,
Do you see this issue in Outline mode? Please post system info from Illustrator Help menu > System Info and if possible post a screen recoding

AI 21.1.0 Mac Sierra
Action: Switching a sublayer to Outline mode while having two 'windows' of same file open.
Problem: Instead of outlining the objects in BOTH windows, AND outlining to THIN black lines, it only outlines the second window (on second monitor) and then even those outlines are thick and heavy, which makes outlining them pointless. When we outline a layer, just outline THAT layer, on EVERY window instance and make the outline THIN! (like they always have been in AI for decades).
Stop messing with basic AI behavior!!!

I have had nothing but problems since upgrading to CC 2017. DON'T DO IT if you have an older version. Adobe chat help is terrible as well, as they JUMP to asking me to reset all preferences and then to reinstall my program without trying to really find the issue and solution.

Illustrator CC 21.1.0 (64-bit)
When viewing in "outline" view, it doesn't display properly as it should be and for some reason, when on this mode, panning doesn't work, it doesn't give you any feedback, but when you enter preview cpu (after panning in outline view), it then refreshes and move the view as if you've panned to that spot using the outline view. I needed to deactivate the GPU enhancement for me to be able to use the outline view properly, but at a cost of a slower refresh rate when navigating.
FYI: I'm using an XPS 15 (9560), Windows 10 Pro (latest version and updated), GTX 1050 latest drivers.
Someone has already posted about this, and I hope we're getting a fix for this soon on your next update.
Regards,
Adrian

speed up the redraw and refresh frame rates please....
Using two black filled characters, displaying in outline to work on a single logo concept, containing no more than 48 nodes (and a handful of anchor points).
I'm running Illustrator CC on a 5k imac - 4.2ghz Intel i7 w/ 40gb of ram and this thing is slower than a Power Mac G5 w/ 512mb ram. I have a small library of itunes tracks playing in background and Chrome browser with one page displaying this very adobe page. I've only packed illustrator with a modest set of the classic fonts / typefaces, and classic ever efficient CS5 outperforms this version 5 to 1. What are we (students) paying $400 a year for?
It's 2017 and Illustrator still has terrible redraws and refresh frame rates when dragging objects. C'mon...
if there is a way to speed this baby up... please let me know.
thanks,

When you switch to outline mode (Ctrl-Y) you immediately go back to the outdated and incredibly frustrating marquee-zoom tool instead of the new and much more efficient Animated Zoom tool to click and drag to zoom. Incredible program, but this is by far one of the most annoying and "I-want-to-rip-my-hair-out" features.
