M1 Apple McBook - Crashing
I just got a new MacBook Pro with the M1 Apple chip. Illustrator keeps freezing and crashing. It also causes my whole computer to crash! I heard many other people are having the same problem. It is unusable by this point!
This issue (entire M1 McBook system freezes) is fixed for AI 25.0.1 and 25.1
This fix takes effect in a day’s time, if you still face this entire system freeze then please follow the steps to update
1). Backup your preferences and launch Illustrator with fresh preferences
2). Quit and re-launch Illustrator once again
3). Use Illustrator in your workflow
If you see AI crash and entire system is not freezing then please create a new issue.
Big Sur 11.0.1, Illustrator 25.0.1
During saving processes, panning around documents, general work flow illustrator will stop responding without crashing. I've also experienced Finder not responding when this happens sometimes.
Regularly occurs with InDesign as well
Yes, it is pathetic. Adobe did this with the transition to Intel on Macs as well. Last to the dance Adobe. Try turning off GPU performance. It cured crashing for me, but it’s so slow now, almost unusable for a different reason. Adobe is literally, the only App on my M1 Mac not native...
I have been several times in touch with Adobe support and NONE of the technicians acknowledged the fact that Adobe Illustrator is not compatible at this point with the M1 chip. They kept telling me the problem was not Illustrator and that it should work just fine. This is getting really frustrating. I just can’t work on it right now and I won’t continue to pay for long. Does Adobe at least know when the update is going to be released?
Please recompile code to run Native on Apple M1, this is a joke. I have been a faithful AI user for 30 years and Adobe should be ashamed of themselves. Literally the only software i use that is not Native to M1 platform. and I use it the most... Affinity is looking very attractive right now.
Hi, I spoke with Adobe and they told me to report this on here. I just got the new 2020 MacBook Pro M1 and purchased creative cloud, illustrator has been glitching nonstop and crashing my computer. As well as creative cloud in general, but I've noticed it more with illustrator than anything else.
Just wanted to make it aware to adobe that there is an issue. I understand they are in the middle of trying make a version specifically for the silicone processor current version is an Intel processor based program. Wanted to make it aware that no matter what you're doing, it's crashing. Including using the pen tool, changing the colors of the strokes and fill, also causing my computer to crash to the point where I have to completely restart it because it's completely frozen. My screen will sometimes turn magenta pink or parts of my screen will turn magenta. Ready spoke with Apple earlier today and I'm going to be calling them again to include all of these issues as well as the issues I spoke to them about prior. I love adobe and I was so excited to get creative cloud after having the same laptop for 11 years (OG 2009 MacBook pro) and using CS5 so it's very disappointing that this is happening, but I understand it will get better in the future I just wanted to make things very clear to adobe there are major issues for anyone that's using the new 2020 MacBook Pro M1 silicon processor.
Picked up a new MacBook Pro M1 as my previous model unfortunately packed up. Since I have installed Illustrator 2021, my machine has been constantly crashing. InDesign and Photoshop work absolutely fine but Illustrator makes my entire system crash. I can't complete any of my work with this.
The overall feedback from forums is to wait until an optimised version comes out but that simply isn't good enough, how can people be expected to wait until mid 2021 for an optimised version? Ridiculous.
Is there a fix? I understand that these machines are new and normally I wouldn't purchase a first gen like this but I had very little choice.
This needs to be fixed ASAP.
Same here. Very basic manipulations make the wheel spin (changing a shape, typing, etc.) and Illustrator shuts down.
Please please fix Adobe systems with the new M1 chip. Adobe programs are causing the new macbook to crash frequently and is affecting programs outside of Adobe as well.
So I just uninstalled all my apps and reinstalled them and they seem to work fine now. Will keep this thread posted on how they keep going.
It didn’t fix anything permanently. Illustrator is still basically unusable.
I think I may try an older version of illustrator to see if that fixes the issue. Doubt it but worth a shot as it’s completely unusable at the moment.
Does Adobe even hear us?? Like do they even read these?

Illustrator crashed several times on MacBook Air M1. I’d like to know if the problem is with the beta version running on M1 MacBook, or if it’s because I only have 8 gig of Ram. Apple assured me that I could run Illustrator on 8 gig, but If it’s crashing because of that I’ll have to exchange.

Happens to me too. Illustrator freezes and can’t even Force Quit. Had to force restart the entire computer.

This is happening to me too, is there a way to solve it as I cannot get any work done at the moment?
I recently just got my new Apple MacBook Pro 13in laptop, with the Apple silicon M1 chip. My other adobe apps seem to be fine but Illustrator keeps freezing, lagging, rendering artwork improperly and sometime just all together crashing. The most recent crash happened when I when to move a picture I pasted into my document. The whole application froze, and the application crashed shortly after. After Illustrator freezes or crashes, many other applications open on my Mac stop responding too, but it always start with illustrator.

I'm also having the same issues using Illustrator on a new MacBook Pro M1, running Big Sur and Illustrator v25. I wish I could say what causes the spinning wheel to appear, but it happens at random (e.g., moving type, adjusting a path, saving a file). Often, the issue does work itself out if I sit and wait. However, just as often, I have to either force quit Illustrator or restart my MacBook. I haven't experienced a similar issue on any other apps. It seems limited to Illustrator.
I have had the same issue today with Illustrator on Macbook Pro M1, it's already crashed 3 times, taking the system down with it and requiring a re-boot. (I have been working with fairly small files.)
First of all I really like your products and rely on them on a daily basis. Having bought the new Macbook Pro M1 I was excepting some smaller issues with some of your software. For Illustrator there is a main issue which really needs urgent fixing: The software randomly freezes and crashes the whole Mac. Working productively is not possible because of the spikes. It happens with larger files but also with rather small ones just while using the pen tool. This really needs fast troubleshooting guys! Thank you so much and contact me if you need any further information.
