Download some new samples 5 and 6 where I tried some workarounds. But in vain.
Also added all screenshots I did and posted at Adobe Illustrator Forum:

I updated the forum thread with some clever workarounds. At least I thought they were clever enough to circumvent the issue with the mapping. Not so. Had no luck. Details here and in posts below in the same thread:

    Hi Jeremy,
a wonderful idea. Currently I'm using symbols for mapping areas on 3D models.
Parts of the artwork are placed PDFs from InDesign. If I could place and link the PDFs and the symbols would be updated every time the linked PDF changes, yes, that would be great.

FWIW: I have some issues when strokes are used in symbols that will be mapped to 3D models. The rendered shapes will change in a strange way. Not so if shapes are used where only fills are applied.

Just a general status update. We are currently and will continuously improve SVG import support in Adobe Illustrator. We are currently working on solving the issues mentioned in this report. Please feel free to open new bug reports here on uservoice if you are experiencing additional/untracked issues.

There is no true PDF Export in Illustrator, because Illustrator allows to have editable PDFs with .ai-content stored within. Other apps does not allow that, and some users heavily rely on editable PDFs.

Attemps to solve this were made, but there is no clear solution so far. Still we hope to find one.

The intended way to get a PDF (without loosing your data) at the moment would be to use Save a Copy command that saves a separate copy of your file to PDF instead of Save As which keeps a saved file open.

Hi Everyone, This feature has been available since August 2020 release (version 24.3). Please update to the latest release using Creative Cloud desktop App: https://helpx.adobe.com/in/creative-cloud/help/creative-cloud-updates.html Thank you for all the feedback.

You can now select multiple layers in Layers panel. Click the bars (they get highlighted blue) if you want to operate layers and not their content (e.g. to drag to reorder) or click their markers to select their content — circle (target ones) or square (selection ones) next to them. There is no real difference which to pick, but if you want to select a range of layers, using Shift, use target markers.

    Hi Om,
why not storing the unprotected PDF here:

    https://www.adobe.com/content/dam/acom/en/devnet/illustrator/pdf/

EDITED Feb 18, 2020: Link is not valid anymore: 404 error

That's the place where a google search will see it easily.

FWIW: The same thing with InDesign.
You cannot draw a perfect circle there as well.
The difference is minimal, but it is there.

    Very good idea!
Subfolders should be visible as well.
    Just like InDesign's Scripts panel.

    Hi Jeremy,
I learned the other day that you can achieve what you want with tools already there in Illustrator.
However it will definitevely require some extra steps:

Have the star shape stacked above all open paths.
Have a rectangle that covers all your open paths and the star shape on top.

Select the star shape and the rectangle.

Use pathfinder tool to punch out a star shape from the rectangle.
Use the first tool from the right in the first row from the bottom of all pathfinder tools.
In my German version this is "Hinteres Objekt abziehen" ( Minus Back ).

Now select the open paths plus the new shape with the punched out star and use the pathfinder tool left to the tool you used before, in my German version called: "Kontur aufteilen".

Problem with all that: You have to remove a lot of paths after ungrouping. That's tedious.

    Regards,
    Uwe

    Hi Jeremy,
    voted! A very good idea!

Pathfinder should work with open paths. That would make it easy to cut a number of open paths to form. Can be very performant for preparing threaded text paths for curved prints like adhesive labels, stickers or price labels where text must follow the outer shapes.

Alternatively: Allow text wrapping with text on text paths!

    Best,
    Uwe Laubender
