    Yes, the entire user environment should be synced in creative cloud:

    * preferences
    * keyboard shortcuts
    * actions
    * scripts
    * custom presets (templates, swatches, graphic styles, brushes, symbols, patterns)

    Adobe - there's half a dozen or so ideas shared for this same feature now, perhaps join then together?

    Agreed.

    In the meantime, Vector First Aid from Astute Graphics sort of does this.

    Would the plugin you're refering to happen to be Astute Graphic's Vector First Aid? It's absolutely fantastic although it doesn't quite do your thing.

    I'm currently hanging around waiting for Illustrator to finish embedding some linked AI files. I have a handful of other files open, but the whole app is locked up so I can't do anything else. It's using 10% CPU capacity (100% on one core). Crazy much?

    In other news, I was one of those suckers who went for an Nvidia Quadro card based on all the marketing hype of 10X performance gains in Illustrator... more like constant instability and negative performance issues (and hours wasted experimenting with drivers)! I occasionally turn on so called "GPU Performance" again to see if anything has improved; not so far.

    So yeah, multi threaded CPU functionality would be favourite in this day and age.

    Hi Sarah, many thanks for the feedback.

    I do of course know about expanding artwork, it’s how I made the ‘Expected’ example. However, the point is to retain the live art behaviour of the brush, which breaks when you expand the artwork.

    I understand why it happens (the original object takes a stroke as well as the brush) but I still think this is unwanted brush behaviour. If there’s a brush then the object should not be effected by appearance. There’s simply no reason for it, unless there’s an extra stroke or fill.

    The result of this unwanted behaviour is that brushes aren't as powerful as live art as they could be.

    I’ll submit this as a feature request instead.

    Cheers,
    Mark

    I've found another example not using brushes which might more clearly illustrate the issue with strokes.

    1) Make a stroked open path
    2) Apply a transformation effect, eg. scale vertical 50%
    3) Group the path
    4) Apply a stroke to the group.

    Expected result: A stroke just around the visible transformed path

    Actual result: A stroke around both the original path (not wanted) and the visible transformed path (wanted).

    Again, the outline stroke effect doesn't help here.

    The issue with anomalous gaps in brushes is separate from this.

    I should elaborate steps taken:
    1) Make a simple pattern brush. Make sure it has a partly concave shape so that the path is partly uncovered by the brush (eg. see image).
    2) Apply the brush to an open path (eg. a line).
    3) Group the path.
    4) Apply a stroke to the group in the appearance panel.
    5) Drag the stroke down underneath the contents of the group.

    See the effect... problems detailed above.

    Note - I have indeed tried using the 'outline stroke' effect; it works very nicely for outlining normal strokes, but it doesn't work on brushes.

    Yogesh - you're technically right, but WOW is it tricky to accurately pick up an appearance in practice.

    The problem seems to come when an object's visible appearance is determined by the appearance of the groups containing it.

    For example, to apply a stroke around a stroke it's necessary to use the ‘outline stroke’ effect, group the path and then apply a stroke around the group. It looks simple enough by eye, but you can't pick up that appearance with the eye dropper. Frustrating.

    Would it be possible to pick up the 'deep' appearance of an object by picking up the whole group-hierarchy appearance and, if necessary, applying that group-structure (with their appearance attributes) to the target object? If there were a smart way to do this without generating chaotic vector garbage, it would hugely improve the tool...

    Yep, and not just workspaces. The entire user environment should be synced in creative cloud:

    I fully agree that backing up libraries is essential. Without this, relying on libraries in ones workflow is a big risk. My preferred solution to this would be for Adobe to connect CC Libraries with CC files, enabling you to sync between the two, locally and on the cloud. The potential benefits of this are massive. There's a prominent feature request for this already...

    I'm on the fence about groups and categories though. What would the interface for that look lik? At the moment we just give each library item a long name according to a naming convention, and then use the search feature to retrieve stuff. Mostly it works fine. But we have thousands of certain types of item (eg. figures, icons, buildings) which can make finding certain specific things tricky. Hmm.

    I think tags/keywords for each item could be a good idea though.

    Do you know about alt-dragging items out of the library to embed them rather than link them?

    Sorry if that's not the issue you're referring to, the above works fine for me.

    In other news, this is the same as my first feature request. Perhaps give that some love? ;) Hopefully it'll get noticed...

    On sweet heavens absolutely YES please, I've wanted this for ages. This simple feature would instantly add a ton of power to object manipulation in Illustrator.

    Say, for example, you're making an object with connected parts, like a figure (human or other animal), a chain, a machine, or simply an abstract set of connected shapes; if you can permanently position the reference point of each sub-part of that object then you have effectively 'rigged' that object. Your figure now has joints, and is instantly easy to re-position without dislocating the limbs.

    So yes, fully agreed. This gets my vote as a must-have feature.
