I fully agree that backing up libraries is essential. Without this, relying on libraries in ones workflow is a big risk. My preferred solution to this would be for Adobe to connect CC Libraries with CC files, enabling you to sync between the two, locally and on the cloud. The potential benefits of this are massive. There's a prominent feature request for this already...

I'm on the fence about groups and categories though. What would the interface for that look lik? At the moment we just give each library item a long name according to a naming convention, and then use the search feature to retrieve stuff. Mostly it works fine. But we have thousands of certain types of item (eg. figures, icons, buildings) which can make finding certain specific things tricky. Hmm.

I think tags/keywords for each item could be a good idea though.

Do you know about alt-dragging items out of the library to embed them rather than link them?

Sorry if that's not the issue you're referring to, the above works fine for me.

In other news, this is the same as my first feature request. Perhaps give that some love? ;) Hopefully it'll get noticed...

On sweet heavens absolutely YES please, I've wanted this for ages. This simple feature would instantly add a ton of power to object manipulation in Illustrator.

Say, for example, you're making an object with connected parts, like a figure (human or other animal), a chain, a machine, or simply an abstract set of connected shapes; if you can permanently position the reference point of each sub-part of that object then you have effectively 'rigged' that object. Your figure now has joints, and is instantly easy to re-position without dislocating the limbs.

So yes, fully agreed. This gets my vote as a must-have feature.

I agree that the reference point should be part of the transform controls. Personally I do use it mostly for rotation, but it bugs me that 1) I have to use the rotation tool, and 2) that it resets on leaving the rotation tool.

So yeah, I want the reference point to be part of the transform controls, and I want its position to persist with the object when I move it after leaving the transform controls. That would allow me to set custom rotation points for nested grouped objects, a bit like rigging a character.

The benefits of this are extensive to say the least (eg. creating a library of editable jointed characters), particularly if the feature also worked when exporting to After Effects...

    Hi Egor!

Sounds highly familiar – lots of key bindings for various ‘Select Same’ commands, lots of time juggling between them, and locking and hiding unwanted stuffs. I also use a bunch of scripts for selecting text by size and by typeface (although that’ll be better once they roll out the fix for the bug that brakes actions containing scripts). Though it starts off manageable the extra complexity means extra time wasted on extra selection malarkey.

I work on large, detailed illustrated system maps where all the objects relate in a conceptual taxonomy. Hacky work-arounds (eg. giving objects subtly unique colours or appearance attributes) don’t cut it (and are so annoying anyway).

Having the ability to fine-tune selections, for example by object type and by appearance attribute, would be a real blessing. Even more so if we could define our own labels for object types and add them into the searches…

If I get a moment this week I’ll mock up an example for what this might look like.

    Cheers,
    Mark

Ah right - it's valuable to me because I spend all day in Illustrator working on very large, complex compositions which require frequent alterations, and I currently spend a lot of time clicking on bits in order to change appearances or apply transformations etc.

This is a super-important idea that would save us lots of time and enable new ways of working. For instance, we could use a script to export assets straight to the library.

At the moment we have tens of thousands of files on our local server that we can't access directly through the library panel. And we have tens of thousands of library items that we can't download or view locally. And we can't use a script to export assets to the library.

If CC Files and CC Libraries were joined up,

Currently, If I want to scale up a page from A2 to A1, I have to scale the artwork by 141% and wiggle it around a bit until it fits again. With highly complex files, this is really annoying!

So I totally agree, this would be a big help.
