There is a way to do the same exact distortion in Illustrator, using a free MeshTormentor plugin (please see the full instruction in the comments).
However, an easier native way to do it is still welcome (as the general improvements over mesh distortion capabilities) — so please keep voting for this if you want it to happen.

I am happy to share that we have fixed this bug in our latest release – 27.0.1 which is available worldwide now.
Going forward, our goal is to fix as many top User-Voice bugs as possible and as frequently as possible. Given the nature of the fixes, some of the bugs will take a longer time to fix, but we are on it.
You can update to the latest release using Creative Cloud desktop App: https://helpx.adobe.com/in/creative-cloud/help/creative-cloud-updates.html
Thank you for all the feedback. Keep it coming!

Similar problem to the Mac issue described here (https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/601447-illustrator-desktop-bugs/suggestions/45861172-transparency-panel-in-appearance-window-does-not-r) except my enter key works when changing the transparency value. My problem occurs when trying to change the percentage tint value of a spot/global colour and neither tab nor enter key are registering. The only way it gets applied is when clicking away from the panel with the mouse button. The tab/enter key responds as it should everywhere else.
There are of course multiple ways of applying a tint adjustment. Oddly, I've just checked and the error happens when I shift-click the swatch in the Control toolbar up top and also via the colour section of the Properties panel and the Appearance panel. However, it does NOT happen if I open the dedicated colour panel and make the change there, both the tab and enter key respond here as they should. Strange!

I'd settle for this but would prefer to be able to convert any path into a selection. Photoshop has been able to do this since forever and it seems completely bonkers that the vector program cannot!
I currently need to make a precise diagonal selection to duplicate these shapes to fill the newly widened promenade. The lack of a Photoshop-esque Polygonal lasso tool or convert path to selection function makes this task really cumbersome!
Why didn't I group one column before I transformed it in the first place ... I know ::facepalm::
