Hey thanks for the info @Lance.

Let's rephrase this ask then "Illustrator should add support for 'Optional Content Groups' if that's what it takes. Or basically to do whatever it is Affinity are doing ... because when you open a PDF in Affinity Designer, that 'little' £50 application is once again showing Adobe (who created the PDF standard) how things should be done. There isn't a clipping mask in sight and although not perfect (and inverted from the Acrobat layer stack) I can glean more info from the layer structure in Designer than I can from Illustrator - see layer examples from the attached screenshots.

Sure in an ideal world we wouldn't be using PDFs but the world can be far from ideal and we all need workarounds to make things happen. This feature request is trying to make a workaround work better.

This isn't just related to InDesign, I likewise receive PDFs generated by CAD programs which contains layers when view in Acrobat but when you open these in Illustrator the structure is obliterated.

This needs to be addressed as you can waste hours trying to unpick the damage done.

We are working towards giving preference to Photoshop for editing linked images, if Ps is installed. This may mean the label showing as ‘Edit on Photoshop’ when an linked image is selected. The change does not affect OS level file type associations.

Definitely needs an option for a local overide within Illustrator as my company has locked me out from editing the "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\image\shell\edit\command" Registry key to be able to set the global edit to Photoshop.

Take a look at what Affinity are doing, they have a really neat PDF handler in Designer & Publisher which prompts you to group lines of text together when you open the PDF. It works really well, shame I don't seem to be able to export that back out to IDML/AI as these are only supported for importing. EPS/SVG or anything else for that matter doesn't appear to retain the text flow.

C'mon Adobe you're the big dog where PDFs are concerned, are you gonna let that chiwawa get one over you?

I can't believe this hasn't had more votes already!

To operate just as it does in Photoshop please Adobe Illustrator Devs.

I want to pick up something from one open file then go File > New and select a 'From clipboard size' option that autosizes the new artboard in the resulting document to the object in the paste buffer.

    Thanks!

Radial, Mirror, Grid Repeat objects are available in the latest desktop versions, 25.1 and higher.
There are some improvements still to be made, and the team is aware of some of them.
Please search for the related requests here on UserVoice forums or add new ones if you can’t find a suitable one.

As much as I love being able to have this space available as some kind of support network for like minded individuals who share a common angst. Please can you move this from the backlog to the 'front' log and expedite this 'feature' and provide an indicative timeline for when we can expect its release?

I suggest you incorporate into a sub version release asap and not hold this one back until November's MAX event. Else you might subject yourselves to much ridicule on the subject of it taking you so long to finally see the light :D

    Thanks!

Thank you @Neeraj Nandkeolyar - this is so long over due! Could you give an approximate timeframe when we can expect this feature to be added?

    Hi Everyone,

All the effect checkboxes have now been set to ON by default, and are sticky (meaning that if you disable preview, on next launch of Illustrator preview will remain disabled). This functionality now is available in our latest release build – 24.1.1 for Win and 24.1 for Mac which is available worldwide now.

    What’s new in 24.1: https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/whats-new.html

You can update to the latest release using Creative Cloud desktop App: https://helpx.adobe.com/in/creative-cloud/help/creative-cloud-updates.html

Thank you for all the feedback.

It doesn't look like this is moving beyond review anytime fast!

For anyone looking for a very affordable offset solution, look no further that Rick's Toolshed plugin here: https://rj-graffix.com/downloads/plugins/#toolshed

The offset can be preset to a specified distance, applied to open paths, and even be duplicated multiple times and then mirrored along the path.
