General slowness on using Illustrator on Mac is one of the major issues reported in this thread. Illustrator team made significant progress in replacing Illustrator’s GPU rendering engine from OpenGL to macOS Native Metal Rendering Engine – https://developer.apple.com/metal/.
We have observed common operations like Zoom, Pan, and rendering operations are now smoother in cases where it was sluggish as reported in this thread. We urge Mac users to try the Illustrator Beta build with Metal support and share your feedback.
Please note, this may not address other performance issues reported in this thread not related to rendering like File Save, Export, or slowness in any particular feature. This build is available in Illustrator Prerelease Download Section – https://www.adobeprerelease.com/beta/85A6F544-2705-49BD-8314-DD549C6A1713

Thanks for the feedback. Want to give an update that we have removed the dialog, and the new experience is available in our latest release build – 24.1.1 for Win and 24.1 for Mac which is available worldwide now, in case you want to give it a try. Now, there will be no blocking message, we will show a “soft message” which will auto-dismiss .
You can update to the latest release using Creative Cloud desktop App: https://helpx.adobe.com/in/creative-cloud/help/creative-cloud-updates.html

4 votesThe solution to that would be to activate a stroke if you want to apply a color to it, then to hold Shift when clicking a color — does not matter where this color is on a stroke or a fill. Illustrator then applies the picked color to the active fill/stroke, ignoring the source nature. There are two things to know — the cursor does not inform you about this mode (unlike the Alt-mode, should be addressed), and if you pick a color from a swatch — you’d get a screen representation of the color... harmless for RGB documents (if your color settings are in order), but crucial for CMYK documents (should be addressed too). Pleas comment back.
An error occurred while saving the comment Wes Rand commentedA suggestion that might save you some time (and is something I discovered fairly recently.) If you have a box with a color and want another object to use that color for its stroke, use the eyedropper with the other object selected and then hit "shift" + "x" which will swap fill and stroke colors. A drawback is that the new stroke will be set to the default parameters.
A better option might be Adobe adopting the "Graphic find and replace" tool from Freehand it got when it bought Macromedia. Then you could make conditional changes to objects.

An error occurred while saving the comment Wes Rand commentedOne way this can work is choosing the PDF format and selecting a PDF option that includes the AI file for editability. I use this option pretty frequently and it works well. Straight AI format might be preferable in some situations but the PDF format can work.

You can create a flat long shadow using the Transform effect. It doesn't have that gradient effect (you could get that if you break the transform effect apart.)
