It's quite funny that using patterns in the envelope gives a better effect than clipping. It's riskier when working with packaging - yes, but a patterned object doesn't 'push out' warping as badly as clipping does. This despite the fact, that patterns have hidden objects in them - outside the visible area, which can then be seen after expanding the envelope.
Nevertheless, due to the more difficult control of the pattern object, the only thing left is to 'trim' the objects physically into the clipping framework.
This is a pity, as it would bring Adobe closer to more professional tools like ESKO or PACKZ.
