The solution provided in the comments below.

However, when the key color is automatically gets set as the white (or any grayscale tint) as the most prominent color, the hue shift gets calculated wrong.

If you think Illustrator should pick another color in cases like this — please continue voting.

Egor, Thanks for the file. I appreciate your comment. But your file does not offer any explanations. There is an empty text layer. I have studied the brush paths & options but don't understand what you are trying to say regarding your examples.

Sorry. Am still not sure that this is a bug or my lack of understanding of Art Brush Options. My test ai file attached is based around the definition of Hue (definition a colour or shade) I believe a "Hue Shift" should be a hue color either between the Key Color and other color(s) present in the custom brush OR a gradient stroke of changing hue between these colors.

In the file test below the colors are:
    Black R=0 G=0 B=0
    Red R=162 G=20 B=0

Therefore "hue shift" should show custom brush stroke hue or hues of values in between.

If it is a bug then apologies for posting on wrong branch.

    AI 24.3 (64 bit)

OS - Win 10 Intel Graphics (see screenshot files attached)

Action - Art Brush Options (Colorization)

Methods Available: None, Tints, Tints & Shades, Hue Shift

According to Key Color "Tips" I should be able to sample the stroke/fill color of my brush sample. See key color tips screenshot.

Method- Open Brush Library>Artistic>Artistic_Paintbrush (Choose Paintbrush Wide)

I drag this brush from Brush Panel onto empty Artboard
I use Selection Tool to select this brush sample and color stroke/fill red (see screenshot brush color1

I make the extra effort to add values to CMYK to make sure all components of color have a value.

Double click on this brush in Brushes Panel to view Art Brush Options of this brush. See screenshot.

The sample image in Art Brush Options does not reflect the color of sample on art board. As you can see it's black. I enable Key Color eyedropper. There is no change. Even when I use the eyedropper on the white background of the preview. I scroll through the colorization methods: None, Tints, Tints & Shades, Hue Shift

    In short these options are

None work as intended. According to the Tips I should be able to detect component

I have tried this in both RGB & CMYK color modes (File>Document Color Mode)

    Brush Colorization functionality appears broken.
