I have something of a resolution for this, but it's not a good one:
Adobe tech support had me *uninstall* the font from my iPad. Once it was uninstalled there it began to work again in Illustrator. So it seems that you cannot use Adobe fonts in other applications on iPad if you also want to use them on Illustrator.

For me too, they worked for a few weeks and abruptly stopped working sometime in November so I suspect it was an update (not sure if Apple or Adobe) that causes the issue. Hopefully resolved soon.

I spent hours and hours on tech support, uninstalling and reinstalling fonts and apps to no avail. Hopefully they come out with a patch in the next set of updates. It's as if editing some letters in a particular font has "ruined" that font on every other artboard.

In two artboards that contained text that I edited to a path, text boxes that I did NOT edit to a path disappeared--the group still exists in layers but it looks blank, and when I select it, the size of the selected area is not the size of the text that used to be there. Changing the color, opacity, cutting and pasting, nothing brings it back. The text boxes that contained text that I edited to a path are still there, however.
