Uh yeah, I can't believe there is no way to do this already... I have a ton of layers that I spent a reasonable amount of time putting a nice naming convention into, but there is a point where this breaks down and finding things by searching would be much easier. Many modern apps allow this, and yet I find myself here looking for it for Illustrator.

Same issue... Mac Big Sur with latest illustrator creative cloud... Been puzzling me for some time now, finally tripped over this thread.
For me, I have not t found a work around to get it to work again, by adjusting layer ordering... Apparently my layering is too complex or something?
If I create a new document and create some simple shapes it works fine but as soon as I open my complex illustration it stops working... I can assure you starting over is not an option, nor is restructuring my entire illustration... So frustrating.
This was never a problem before, so some new illustrator feature or update created this issue.
Also, all other selection tools work fine, this is a lasso only issue as far as I can tell.
