Egor, thank you for your time. We receive the artwork from our client in the same manner for over 15 years. The way they save and send the documents will not change. They would have to change it globaly, which is impossible to do at this time. We checked the pdf file on 3 identical computers (same model, same OS, same Ai version) two computers merge the layers, one computer opens it properly.

Yesterday, I had over 45 minutes online call with Adobe support, trying to figure it out, sharing screens, testing the file on both Mac and PC etc with no result. At the end it has been passed on to Adobe engeneering to figure it out. We will see next week if there is a solution.

I also checked other forums on the web and there are other people struggling with the same issue.

I also cannot share the file as the content is highly confidential.

@egor I did not create the pdf, we get the global artworks from our client to adapt it. Yes, it is Ai saved into pdf. Yes, it fails to read back the original Ai. I am in contact with Adobe support. They are working on it, but so far they have no idea what to do with it. I cleaned up my comp and reinstalled Ai with no result.
