I would like Illustrator to support display-performance options for linked images, similar to InDesign's Fast Display, Typical Display, and High Quality Display.
When creating website layouts, landing pages, advertising layouts, or design comps in Illustrator, it is common to place a large number of high-resolution PSD, JPEG, and PNG files as linked images. Even when the images are linked rather than embedded, Illustrator can become very slow when many high-resolution images are used.
The ideal feature would work as follows:
Keep the original PSD, JPEG, PNG, or other source file linked
Do not require users to manually create lower-resolution proxy files
Reduce only the preview resolution inside Illustrator
Allow users to switch between Fast, Typical, and High Quality display modes
Always use the original linked image when exporting PDF or raster images
Ideally, allow display quality to be controlled either per document or per linked image
InDesign already allows users to keep high-resolution original files linked while displaying lower-quality previews during editing. This makes layouts containing many images much easier to work with.
A similar feature in Illustrator would significantly improve performance for web design, landing page design, advertising layouts, and other image-heavy design workflows.
Illustrator already has an option to use low-resolution proxies for linked EPS files. I would like to see a similar system extended to commonly used linked formats such as PSD, JPEG, and PNG.
