You can do it natively now, by choosing the standalone Delete Anchor Point Tool and clicking a point with Shift held.

Illustrator needs a native solution to bezier point removal. The Vectorscribe plug-in for point removal is so good for cleaning up useless points along a curve without changing the shape. The simplify tool is ok at this but it often changes the shape of the bezier paths after and takes more tweaking than simply brushing over a path to remove points with no changes to the shape. Such a powerful feature should be native and not a 3rd party plug-in.
