    I found the cause for this to be the settings panel on the first save of a file.

    I realised I had 'Create PDF Compatible File' and 'Use Compression' checked.
    I started unchecking those two, plus the 'Embed ICC Profiles' (no idea what the third does) and haven't had an issue since!

    This issue has literally just burnt me.

    Spent 5-6 hours on a small section of a detailed illustration.
    Came back to it today and the layer group for that section is now a flattened/raterized layer called 'Image', which pixelates on zoom.

    This layer group had a fair few normal vector layers, a couple of inner groups and a couple of clipping masks.
