Renaming a swatch group makes a duplicate group
When I rename a swatch group on Color Guide interface, it automatically duplicates the color group even though no alteration took place to the included color swatches themselves. I don't want that! I just simply need a way to rename each color group just like each swatch.
The only workaround of this bug is to rename a group without duplication is to select all the in-group swatches and make another group under a new name. Then, delete the emptied previous group. What an ungraceful user experience...

Yes, I opened a new blank file with default swatches.
I renamed the Color Group of non Global Swatches.
Again, a superfluous copy of the group was made. So, it seems to be a problem with artificial laboratory conditions of a new file.
As well as being a problem with a file that is in the real world under conditions that people actually work in too. -
Can’t replicate :( Just won’t happen for me, does not matter if the color group has global colors in it or not.
Can you reproduce it a brand new file with default swatches? -

Yes, this is happening for me too. Every time.
I select a Color Group, in the Swatches Panel. Double click on the folder.
The Edit Color option box opens. I change the name of the Color group. It asks if I want to save the change. I press Yes.
Then back in the Swatches Panel I get a superflous copy of the swatches Color Group I just renamed.
It makes no sense to have this happen.
And it has happened using three different computers using Illustrator 26, 27 and 28.It looks like a bug. And it would be great get it fixed once and for all.
When one is working with groups of Global swatches – and lots of them – it is unclear what one is actually updating if Illustrator starts generating unwanted Color Swatch Group copies unbidden.
I am currently using Illustrator 28 on Mac OS 14.7.
This problem is one I have experienced with Illustrator 26, 27 and 28. -
Sorry, I can’t understand how do you rename a swatch group using the Color Guide panel. The panel just does not provide this function, as far as I know. It is possible to Save Color Group first, and then open the Recolor Artwork dialog, and rename from there, but it works fine, no duplication happens for me.
Can you please record a short video to demonstrate the exact steps you perform?
