It’s more than dashes for me! When pasted from an Excel chart, a single line of type is often broken at the point of an en-dash. So “1967–2021’ is almost always broken into three parts, 1967, –, and 2021. If you resize the type, it overlaps.
Other issues: Calibri pastes as gibberish. Letterspacing is often uneven, so I have to respecify it as “0.”
This is with Illustrator 26.0.2 running on an M1 Mac with OS 12.0.1. But it’s been this way for many versions.
