This is a very frustrating bug, rendering 'freeform gradients *practically* unusable'.
Our workaround order.
-Use Meshes [slows down our workflow considerably]
-Lock the layers in question anytime you need to work with associative objects (with groups / nested layers)
-Have paths with Freeform gradients at the root of the artboard, and at most, nested within one layer only! The more you nest, the more the problem is exacerbated, i.e., selecting 'All', 'Group' Icon etc., within any form of 'nest' guarantees the fills will vanish.
We can replicate this issue easily in multiple files on multiple PC's.
