We finally got the control over the active artboard border color.

In Beta 30.1.0.89, in Preferences > Selection & Anchor Display, in the new Artboard Display section, we now can choose the color and the border width in pixels — black, 1 px by default, as usual. We can set it 4 px maximum

The border tries to get aligned by center, but stays pixel-perfect, so choosing 3 is safe. Color choices are the same as we get with layers’ colors, with a custom option as well.

There’s no way to tweak inactive artboards’ borders. Please comment if this solution is working for you and if there’s anything you need to have it perfect.

A specific example of where the change to thick artboard borders causes problems in our workflow is that in our printshop we handle a lot of artwork with cut contour lines along the edge of the artboard. Part of our process, especially when working with older legacy files originally prepared for a different workflow, is for the team to check for those cut contour lines. The new black border hides them unless you zoom in very closely, which adds unnecessary complexity.

I’ve also had team members mistake the new border for an actual layer object, thinking it was a black stroke around the artboard that they couldn’t delete. This confusion has created extra steps and slowed us down.
