For drawing inside type objects please try the following steps:
1.Create a type object.
2.Select the type object using selection tool/direct selection tool.
3.Observe that the draw inside option is no longer grayed out.
4.Select draw inside option. The selected type object is marked with dashed lines corners.
5.Draw inside the object.
Or with your workflow you can try the below steps:
1.Create a type object.
2.Convert the type to outline and then expand .
3.Ungroup the object.
4.Select draw inside option. The selected type object is marked with dashed line corners.
5.Draw inside the object.
