CTRL + Spacebar = Zoom in and Out like Photoshop
Not sure why this isn't the same between Photoshop and Illustrator but currently when you press CTRL + Spacebar in Illustrator you get a marquee tool to zoom into a specific location. This should match the zoom in and out function in Photoshop. Or, allow the user to change preferences to an easy check box to enable users to zoom in and out using CTRL + Spacebar like in Photoshop.

As far as I understand it now, it is done now, with the Animated Zoom option in Preferences > Performance.
Does it do it for you?

Don't know what system are on, but on mac CTRL+Spacebar is spotlight search and CMD+Spacebar is system the keyboard layout switch.
