Direct Selection Tool to select only points
When using the Direct Selection Tool to move an anchor point IT SHOULD JUST MOVE THAT POINT without having to click on the point first. If I wanted to move the whole object I wouldn't be using the Direct Selection Tool, WOULD I?

I agree. And related, I often need to expand multiple text boxes and Direct Selection marquee select, doesn't work if a box contains text. Only the lasso works. I don't think it was always. this was. For example: if Im working on a complicated layout with multiple stacked text boxes and horizontal rules I want to make the entire layout wider. you would think I could use the Direct Select tool, grad around the points on the left size and then move those out but I cant. I need to use the lasso.

I couldn't agree with you more! I use Illustrator almost every day for my job and this little annoyance happens almost every time I use it. Please make this change Adobe!

Oh, yeah, I have several things to say about this!
— Lasso tools selects points only, without adjacent segments, unlike Direct Selection, but we need both ways accessible for both tools ...scratch that, it does not, and it seems like it never could, and it’s just my imagination tricks me — I checked older versions and even straight Direct Selection Lasso (when we had it) still selects naked segments.
— We need a way to see a selection of segments, to differentiate selections with points only and points+segments
— There is a free script which deselect segments in a selection, leaving only points, https://github.com/creold/illustrator-scripts/blob/master/md/Select.md#selectonlypoints
