Select similar colors (with a tolerance slider) so you can round up and streamline elements in a messy document
This is basically a tolerance slider added to Select>Same>Fill Color. It would just allow you to cast a wider net to quickly select colors and convert them to a single global color. It's very hard to track down a color that's 1% off from the others in a complex file otherwise. It could also help process multi-color graphics into a limited color palette more efficiently

Also there is the script that can help you to average colors for selected objects: https://github.com/creold/illustrator-scripts/blob/master/md/Color.md#averagecolors

Jeff, do you know you can use Magic Wand for this?
Double-click the tool icon to open the dedicated panel where you can set the tolerance. Just asking.
If you do know, please elaborate on why you prefer accessing it via Select Same Fill command instead of pixel-hunting (that’s my guess why).
