"Draw In Front" button
We have a "Draw Behind" button that adds objects immediately behind the current selected object in the Layers panel.
However, we need a "Draw in Front" button that adds immediately on top of selected objects.
The "Draw Normal" adds objects to the very top position in the Layer.
The attached graphic was created as follows:
1. Magenta rectangle.
2. Cyan rectangle.
3. Select Magenta rectangle
4. Change to "Draw Behind" mode .
5. Yellow rectangle.
6. Select Magenta rectangle.
7. Change to "Draw Normal".
8. Black rectangle.

A draw in front button is exactly what I was talking about in my comment. It can go right next to the draw behind button. I see the original post was made in 2022. Is there any chance that this request will happen?

Every time I go to draw something new in illustrator, the object goes straight to the top of the stacking order. I then have to drag it to where I want in the stacking order. It interrupts my work flow and is frustrating to have to scroll through every object to try and find where I need to be. I would love to be able to click on the object on the screen, and optionally also in the layers panel, that I want my new object to go directly above. An example would be after I draw my base structure of a design, and I want to start adding in details, like a face. I would be able to put everything where I want it in the stacking order as I work. Thank you!

The risk is no greater than switching to the current draw behind or draw inside buttons. I’m not looking for a work around. I’m suggesting an improvement/addition to the current draw modes.

I like the idea!
But since it’s a mode, which is not very clear when turned on, I am a bit afraid of having it. It can bring a lot of confusion, so it should be marked clearly.Meanwhile, there is an easy enough workaround. If you isolate and object, the newly created object will be placed just above it, because you limit the scope. If you assign a hotkey to isolating a selection (it’s blank by default), you effectively create a mode by pressing it.
Please comment back if it works for you.
