Make font searching better for designers
Hi Adobe team,
I’m a working designer, and choosing a typeface is one of the most time-consuming parts of nearly every project I do. The font menu has changed very little in twenty years, and I think there’s a real opportunity to make this part of the workflow much better.
The problems I run into every day
The list is hard to browse. The menu window is small, so I can’t see the font names and the results on the page at the same time. Weights and styles shift depending on the family, which makes comparing difficult.
The menu doesn’t remember my place. After I pick a font and reopen the list, I’m back at the top of the alphabet. When I’m comparing candidates, I lose my place every time.
Alphabetical order is not actually a helpful sort. I’m usually looking for a feeling or a function (a warm serif, a tight grotesque, something for a long caption), and the alphabet doesn’t help with that.
Comparing options means duplicating work. To test candidates, I end up making copy after copy of a line of type and swapping fonts one at a time. A project can easily eat hours this way.
What I’d love to see
A side-by-side comparison view, where I can pin several fonts and preview them on my own text at the same time.
“Find similar” from any font, so once I’m close, I can explore neighbours instead of starting over.
A choice between large families and single typefaces, since the two often serve very different needs.
A persistent scroll position and recent or shortlisted fonts in the menu, so I don’t lose my place.
A larger, resizable font panel that shows names and live previews together.
I appreciate the filters and previews that already exist. They’re useful, and I think they could be the foundation for something much stronger. Anything that makes finding the right font faster would give designers back real time on every job.
Thanks for considering it. I’d be glad to share more about my workflow or test early versions if that would help.

Neal, the problem with jumping back to the top of the list is caused by the Recent fonts section. Unlike other apps, like CorelDRAW, that allows to have both sections within the dropdown to have their own focus at the same time, Ai allows one only — and Ai put it to the first item found — at the top.
So far I can advise 2 things to counter this:
1. Disable the Show Recent Fonts in Preferences > Type completely
2. Upvote this request: Make 'Recent fonts' section in Character palette work alongside with selecting current font in font list — https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657/suggestions/33466396
