Can you add a button that ‘Zooms to True Scale’?
I do a lot of design work where I need to see how big something is in real life. It would be nice if I could tell it to set the view to match the real world. So 1” = 1”, or 1mm = 1mm.
Ideally it would have a little icon in the bottom right that always shows what the scale factor is compared to the real world (like .25/1 if smaller, or 1.25/1 if zoomed in), then you could click the button and it would snap the zoom to 1/1.
I currently hold a ruler or calipers up to the screen to try to get close.
Currently there’s the scale % listed at the top, but it doesn’t match the real world.

Truitt, there is a solution for this (although it is reported it does not always work at some systems).
Go to Preferences > General, and enable 'Display Print Size at 100% Zoom' (off by default).
This should force Ai to estimate the resolution of your display and adjust the scale factor it uses to render canvas accordingly.
Be warned though — this option would mess the 100% view for screen-intended documents, because Ai’s unit system is not just about changing labels, but actually converting units. In this system a pixel equals a point, and HAS to have a resolution, which Ai has defined as 72. Plus it does not really work well with several monitors: http://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657/suggestions/35799382If toggling the option on throws the scaling still when you check it with the ruler/calipers, than (sadly) you are one of those users who has this calculated wrong — then please provide the full specs of your OS, your display, your UI scale factors, etc.
I suppose you should then upvote the bug report on this one then: http://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/601447/suggestions/46783402
