It is now possible to open Pencil Tool Options and untick 'Close paths when ends are within a set tolerance' option completely (or change the value).
This will effectively stop Pencil from auto-joining.
If you want this option to be toggleable on the fly — please vote here: https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657-illustrator-desktop-feature-requests/suggestions/45913831-hold-cmd-ctrl-key-while-drawing-with-pencil-to-tem
An error occurred while saving the comment Anonymous commentedSo incredibly annoying. It’s been ages and this is seriously making me consider switching from Adobe for good. High cost subscription and poor UX decision upon poor UX decision. It seems as though Adobe is more focussed on increasing subscription tie in than good product development.
An error occurred while saving the comment Anonymous commentedImpossible to draw with this. The app automatically closes (joins) line ends even at larger scales such as drawing on A0 sized page. I think it is doing some incredibly unsophisticated “area of sharp” calculation to interpret intent (line only or shape). I can draw a continuous line which auto-joins when the two end points are >5cm!!

At least let me undo this automatic step. I don’t want to always draw shapes! Why do this?

An error occurred while saving the comment Anonymous commentedYes. This is horrible. I can’t use the app without this.

Agreed. Just need to turn off functionality, not create new!
