Pencil tool option to not automatically close paths
Would be great to have the flexibility of having a tool that can accurately capture handwriting - automatic path closing prevents this
It is now possible to open Pencil Tool Options and untick 'Close paths when ends are within a set tolerance' option completely (or change the value).
This will effectively stop Pencil from auto-joining.
If you want this option to be toggleable on the fly — please vote here: https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657-illustrator-desktop-feature-requests/suggestions/45913831-hold-cmd-ctrl-key-while-drawing-with-pencil-to-tem

When you select the pencil tool, if you click on Pencil Settings on the bottom left, you can untick ‘close path automatically’.

I am on the pre-release program, and they have included a fix (that works)! So the next general update will presumably have it

This goes in the category of "what the serious **** adobe, do you ever care how anyone uses your apps?" but the answer is "no"...

I’m shocked I can find no way to turn off path-closing when using the pencil tool to write text - or anything else! Sketching is impossible. A brand-new Illustrator version just released late 2021, and this tool is virtually useless. ???

How can this be? There has to be a way not to close the gap.

Yes, PLEASE FIX THIS. I love using the pencil now on AI for Ipad, but the auto closing thing is making me CRAZY. should be such a simple fix

Really feel this is an important urgent issue that maybe wouldn't be a huge addition? Just a check box pref How can we get more votes?

This is so annoying, and limiting, I’m so tired of trying to figure out work around, or draw in a less organic fashion.

these comments are so true, I hate this ipad app for that reason too.

So incredibly annoying. It’s been ages and this is seriously making me consider switching from Adobe for good. High cost subscription and poor UX decision upon poor UX decision. It seems as though Adobe is more focussed on increasing subscription tie in than good product development.

Why does this have such little votes? It's either impossible or incredibly difficult and frustrating to draw with the pencil the way it is. Please fix it!

Loving the app so far, but looking forward to the option to turn off auto join pencil path lines.

Impossible to draw with this. The app automatically closes (joins) line ends even at larger scales such as drawing on A0 sized page. I think it is doing some incredibly unsophisticated “area of sharp” calculation to interpret intent (line only or shape). I can draw a continuous line which auto-joins when the two end points are >5cm!!

I can’t use the app, even when drawing on an A0 sized page, the app joins the path ends (seemingly based on some % of shape area calculation?). At least let me undo this automatic step. I don’t want to always draw shapes! Why do this?
