   How to save the file so you can update Illustrator.

   Find any existing ai document, duplicate it in the finder. Delete the contents. Drag-and-drop (or copy-paste) the contents of the file that won't save onto the ai file that was opened.
   Save that without changing the existing name. Close it, rename it in the finder. Reopen to check it. Now, the first file that won't save can be closed without saving. Update Illustrator and all should be well.
