   This functionality has been released with v30.0. You can also double-click the name and rename the artboard directly on canvas.

   
   

   You can disable this in Preferences > Selection & Anchor Display, with Show Artboard name on canvas option.

   Currently, the artboard numbers in the top-left corner are only visible when using the Artboard Tool (Shift+O). I propose that these numbers should be always visible in normal editing mode (e.g., when using the Selection Tool) as a visual aid. This would greatly help in quickly orienting and identifying the current artboard when working with multi-artboard documents.

   This should be a non-printing, non-exporting visual guide only.

   My environment: Adobe Illustrator 29.6, Windows 11.
