    I believe I encountered the same problem in version 28.1. The problem is that the character properties don't appear for text inside a clipping group. You can reproduce it with the following steps:

    1. Make some text.
    2. If you select it, a "Character" section will appear in the "Properties" panel, allowing you to set the font and styling (see screenshot #1).
    3. Draw a shape over the text and make a clipping mask out of it.
    4. Now, when you select the text, either by double-clicking it or by entering isolation mode, the "Character" section does _not_ appear in the "Properties" panel (see screenshot #2).

    As a workaround, one can change the font and styling from the Character window instead.
