I'm on an iMac, 2017, running 10.13.2 - experiencing the same issue. I called support and they told me this was a known issue with files stored in iCloud, Dropbox, etc. However, I'm having the same issue even with files on my local machine (opening from downloads folder etc.)
Other Creative Suite products (2018 versions) seem to be working fine - it's just Illustrator. Would love a workaround because I used this program daily. I can create new files, but can not open files.
FYI - saw the request to create a crash dump - but I'm not getting any error, just the spinning wheel of death and the program permanently hung up until I force quit.
