Dear Users,
We have launched this feature in the latest release of Illustrator, 24.2. I request you to try out this feature and give us your feedback.
Thanks,
SanjitAn error occurred while saving the comment Ivan Sablaev (Sahba) commentedI am confirming Anonymous' post with the following: Photoshop since version 3 could create a file that is 30,000 X 30,000 pixels AND can be saved in PSD or PDF format and some others.. You can make it 1500" X 1500" @ 20 ppi and save it as PDF and open it in Acrobat pro and edit and save. You can also make it 2500" square @ 12 ppi AND open in Acrobat. *
The problem in illustrator is that they have to really clean up the old codes and our friends in Adobe are NOT going to pay our friends in India to do it.
* Later Photoshop increased the size limit to 300,000 square but it can be saved in Large format file or TIFF or Photoshop RAW or a few others.
An error occurred while saving the comment Ivan Sablaev (Sahba) commentedTo Gabby: Use inches. 70' X 12=840". Illustrator is limited to 227" so you can work in scale of 1:4, hence, 840/4=220"
As far as the maths goes, illustrator can do that for you. Use the TRANSFORM panel. You can do maths there! e.g. you have an object/shape that is 4' 8" then you use the 4*12 in the W area and hit enter and you shall see 48 in so enter +8 after it and hit enter and it shows 56". then enter /4 after in so you get it in scale of 1:4
Anything you get in inches already, you have to divide by 4
You can also use division / and substraction. - multiplication * or addition +A foot is 12 "
Befriend a non-American second grader and they can teach you arithmetics the right way.
An error occurred while saving the comment Ivan Sablaev (Sahba) commentedIvan Sablaev (Sahba): It would seem obvious to anyone with an IQ of 100 that computer graphics is the way that in 21 century, visual communications are made, and that includes banners, billboards, even buildings and stripe malls. But, Adobe illustrator is limited to a page size of 577.955 cm (227.5”) square! Read more and you see idiotic solution suggestion from them such as “work in scale”!
Two things to consider:
When you save a file and it is available to everyone or sent to a production unit, if the operator just “prints” it without looking at the special instructions, the file would be fine at 1:1 scale. However, that is not the case with using a “scale” other than 1:1
When you work in scale, you have to make a lot of calculations up front to make sure how things are going to work and what scale you should use. Then you have to make sure you won’t get distracted by the smell of the pizza or the coffee and enter numbers in real size instead of scale. That can cause a lot of lost time.
These two simple issues would be very obvious to an average experienced designer or artist, but it is not apparently understood by Adobe ILL team (*see below). So we are stuck with their software because due to the length of time and lack of availability, they are the standards in “visual communication” software.

An error occurred while saving the comment Ivan Sablaev (Sahba) commentedWhat a bunch of nonsense! Need to know workflow, virtual scale,... Why do you need to complicate such a simple request? Increase the artboard size from 227" to 8000" and see if anyone really needs it larger!

What exactly is the need to know how and what for a user is using the software for to make a change in the maximum size of the artboard? I doubt anyone is requesting a realistic UNLIMITED size because such thing is of no use, alas, a reasonable "Unlimited" size for 21 century could be around 20 - 50 meters (800-2000 inches).
Also I would personally like to know where did the standard of 5.7404 meters or 226 inches came from for a binary software? Please, with sugar on top... -

Latest versions of Illustrator can do that.
If you have the bounding box enabled, double-click the bottom filled square handle to toggle Auto Size.
You can also do that in Area Type Options dialog.
An error occurred while saving the comment Ivan Sablaev (Sahba) commentedAbility to make the boundry of the are text to be resized to the amount of text in that box with a click, maybe on the top bar. We never make the text are box to the exact amount of text, especially in copy and paste which means it has to be resized manually EVERY time. A button to make is to contract will be helpful.
