Hotkey to exit Type mode
PLEASE MAKE A "HOTKEY" or keyboard command to EXIT "TYPE MODE."
ONCE ONE IS IN TYPE MODE, A COMMON ERROR IS TO ACCIDENTALLY TYPE:
VVVVVVVVVVVVV
AAAAAAAAAAAAAA
MMMMMMMMMM
etc.
The answer could be as simple as "Simultaneous Spacebar + hotkey letter."

Escape key does that.
If this does not work for you for some reasons — please provide it in the comments.

Another way to commit typing text now is to press Cmd/Ctrl+Enter
Unfortunately, using the same hotkey does not starts editing a text, like it does in Photoshop, and there is a feature request to have it: http://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657/suggestions/38242195 -

Pressing Escape takes you back to the selection tool after you have entered text.
