Keep color values when applying freeform gradients
When applying a freeform gradient, Illustrator picks up colors from everywhere around the selected artwork, also the selected object itself. It would be extremely helpful if it could reliably keep the exact color values the object has, so you don't need to adjust it.

I also agree. This would be splendid. The current behaviour (replacing the actual color with seemingly random colors from all over the place) is a pain to deal with, and it is also highly unintuitive. I can't understand who would need such a behaviour unless you start with an object without colors.

If you have an object with a normal gradient, you can switch between linear and radial with no issue. If you then change to freeform, your colors change to a preset range of colors and thus have to input the original colors.
The existing colors should remain a part of the freeform similar to switching from linear and radial. -

Agreed. I find the tool's behavior puzzling when applying a freeform gradient. The fill color of the object should remain the same with, perhaps, a few color stops within as a start so you know it's now a freeform gradient.
