copy and paste at pre selected place in group shape hierarchy
When did this change… I am 100% sure in the past when trying to paste a shape within the layered structure of a grouped set of objects, ….prior to pasting you could (A) Direct select, or maybe even double-click isolate a place in that layered grouping of shapes to specify where you want your newly pasted shape to go. Before I could, copy - hit (A) direct select an object, and then when I hit CTRL-F or V… the pasted object/shape would sit on top of previously selected shape in that layered hierarchy. Now, there’s no recognition.. or option to paste where previously indicated… it’s either paste on top, behind, in previous place in doc, or CTRL-V which just sticks it in the middle of the screen. I’d love to be able to copy a shape… direct select one object in a group of layered shapes and be able to hit paste and it sits on top of the last one selected and under the next in the layered group.
it's really hard to articulate the problem... I hope it's not too hard to understand.

Gabe, do you still have this problem in the latest version of Illustrator?
-
Gabe, it never changed.
Ctrl+F does exactly what you want it to do.
Copy/cut an object first, then select an object in hierarchy, press Ctrl+F and have you object placed in front of selected sub-object (but using the coordinates of copied object, of course, unlike Ctrl+V does).
Tested right now on Windows in 25.2.3, it works for me. Please try too.
