Masked object within a masked object?
Is it possible to put a masked object (with clip) inside another mask? When I do this - the masked object within gets its clipped path released.

Yes, grouping is essential when you work with opacity (and not clipping) masks. Good luck!

Hi Egor, thanks I managed to get the result now. I select everything and 'Make Mask' in the transparency window. I can get the desired result in '4' by grouping everything under the masking path - if I don't group I get the top result in '4'.
Cheers! -
Kam, double clipping works fine for me, both with hotkeys or menu commands.
If I apply clipping mask and then try to clip the clip group with another object — I get the 'desired result' from step 4.This might be a bug... That is why I am asking what is your process in steps. Clipping mask or opacity mask? What do you use, hotkeys or menus? What OS? Please tell more.
Opacity mask, by the way, works differently. If you have opacity mask already for and object A, selecting both A and B and making another opacity mask will move B into A’s mask, so you might want to group A first.

The desired result i'm trying to achieve. This is a basic explanation of the process.

It is possible and works for me.
How exactly do you try to clip a clipped object?
