This should be a native option, sure, but today we can use a free script by Sergey Osokin, SortLayerItems, to do that:

Works like a clock! I wish you posted this sooner, because sorting these manually is ...ugh! Hope this helps, and thanks for the request! -

Both options would be desirable, but I prefer the ability to organize objects within layers. Currently, I have a document containing numerous objects that should be confined to a single layer, however, arranging them alphabetically would make it easier to find the text object i'm searching. Presently, I manually perform this sorting task.

Do you mean reordering layers themselves, or sorting objects within layers?
