I understand your concern about performance issues when placing or pasting multiple images in Illustrator. I'm happy to let you know that we've made significant improvements to image handling in our latest release, Illustrator 29.3 (February 2025 release).
If you haven't already, I recommend updating to Illustrator 29.3 to experience these improvements. We're actively collecting feedback on these enhancements, so please let us know if you notice a difference in your workflow.

What Illustrator version are you using?
How long does it take to complete the operation? What are the specs of your computer? Where are these images are stored, SSD or HDD?
