Improved 3D effects and Adobe Substance materials
We have introduced new and improved '3D and Materials' effects in 26.0 this year. These effects have been fully rebuilt using modern rendering technology and apart from being much more stable than classic 3D effects, they also allow you to:
* Apply and edit 3D effects conveniently through a non-blocking panel with real time preview.
* Texture artwork using Adobe Substance 3D materials that are highly adjustable. Choose from built-in materials in the panel or upload your own.
* Light up artwork with environment and directional light along with shadows.
* Create smooth and curvy extrusions using the new Inflate option.
* Rotate artwork more easily using the new on-canvas controls.
* Once you've setup your 3D object, render it using Ray tracing with adjustable quality options.
There are more features we're actively working on bringing to these effects. Please share your feedback and suggestions from your experience of using these new effects.
There are now several separate requests made, based on the feedback in this thread:
1. Regarding adjustable color and opacity for 3D shadows:
https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657/suggestions/47054086
2. Regarding presets for each tab in 3D and Materials panels: Object, Materials, Lighting:

All those who commented on the topic until October 16, 2023, are already added as voters there. If this is something you want to have for 3D and Materials in Illustrator — please upvote it. If possible — create new requests and bug reports about 3D, rather than commenting here inside. This will help the team to better prioritize efforts on making the feature better. As always — thanks for the feedback! It helps.

I'm in Create 3D graphics in Illustrator. Under "Render or expand 3D objects as wireframes" the bottom bullet above the video says, "Expand as wireframe: Select Expand as wireframes in the Quick Actions section of the Object tab to convert the object to a 2D object."
However, the Quick Actions section is on the tab of "3D and Materials" at the bottom. I don't see anything about Quick Actions under the Object menu and I don't know what the Object tab would be. If there is such a thing I'm willing to learn. Maybe someone could drop me note or a screen shot?

First time fooling around with the inflate tool. Very fun! Was excited to see the ability for 3d export. I'd love to see a more Advanced Settings upon export, so we can opt for quads instead of triangles. Also, your retopology algorithm is very nice! The resulting topology is super even and consistent. Being able to dial in the amount of tessellation would be great. For rendering, I'd like to import an HDRI. For now, exporting to 3d and rendering in a separate DCC (In this case, Maya and Arnold) is working nicely.

@Britt, oh yeah, it’s such a mess with this concentric circles...
In this particular case I’d go with the Classic 3D. -

But why can't it expand objects to vectors? The expand to wire frames produced junk.

Map art - would love to have access to the unwrapped mesh and easier access to the modification settings for textures including multiple layer textures like we have in photoshop.
EG:
Pattern / symbol / artwork
Background colourA 4 up panel for the view would also be very handy.

Here is an example of multic-colored cube you can study to understand the concept.

Ashok, because there is no functionality to change the color of the extruded portion of a shape only. The color is derived from the color of the shape itself. There is no way to map colors to subsurfaces with this 3D effect.
However, the Classic 3D supports mapping, which can be used to map and fit a flat rectangle with a color of your choice to a subsurface you need. So far it’s the only way. -

Some of these new 3D features and options including materials are great. However I would like the option to remain in vectors when I'm not doing anything related to rasters or materials and don't need rendered views, and just need 3d vector shapes in 3d space that we can map text and symbols to. Right now I'm only finding an expand to wireframe option which sort of works to be left with the expanded planes that I can use for some of our prior workflow. But again the symbol mapping seems gone. We can't simply Object/Expand like we could before. Interesting to see these additions but not sure everyone's usage was taken into account when the switch was made.

It doesn't look like adding graphics/symbols even works. When I click to add a symbol under #D & materials > Materials > Graphics- nothing shows up. Is there a way to activate the classic option until this gets fixed?

Lighting should effect the shadow. At the very least there should be the ability to control the harshness of the shadow. But the intensity of the light should do it ideally.

I like using the 3D extrude tool with text but when I twist the text I always get jagged edges. Example attached. Annoyingly, I then have to take a PNG version of it and try to correct it using photoshop which isn't ideal and takes time.

Objects exported from Illustrator are not coming in at the right scale when I import them into Aero. I've tried a OBJ and GLTF with no luck. I've double-checked that the scale of the object is set to 1 in Aero.
I also can't find where to change the units in Aero from metric to imperial. Is there a way to do that?
