    2026 and this issue persists...
    I have the same issue as OP, but with Windows, using the latest version of Illustrator. Sometimes the AIC file simply stops autosaving - which, for me, is not the issue - I guess it's understandable that sometimes files get corrupted, or are too big, or something in the sync fails. I don't understand the technicality, but I can understand it happens. However, as OP says, the fact that there is no BIG prompt alert letting me know "Your file isn't autosaving anymore, if something crashes now you will lose all progress", is crazy. There is also an issue were File Recovery doesn't work with AIC files that aren't saving, online with local files. So essentially, if i use the cloud, and something crashes (which lets be honest can happen often even if my PC is very strong), I am sure to lose progress.
    I also understood from support today that there is no AutoSave on local files anymore, which I remember having before the cloud existed. So if i want to save locally, I have to re-develop the muscle memory of saving on regular intervals. Honestly I can't see why solving these wouldn't be at the TOP of the list for feature development? Considering there is nothing more frustrating (and costly) than losing progress.
